Hey all, Lately i've been hearing about some types of small but very colorful anemones. I was wondering if anyone has seen it and can direct me towards it. THank in advanced.

I think you mean mini-carpets? The only place I've seen sell them is Fraggle Reef (a RC sponsor). Get to about 5" across. Pic:

Please don't pay $90 - $100 for these things online.
You live in SoCal, there is a place in Yorba Linda called Fish Collection that sells them for less than $30. He has many very nice colors to choose from.

Phil,

Thanks for the helpful info, as always. By the way, is the anemone rare? I kept hearing "rare" every time I see one for sale.

I guess "rare" is a relative term. My LFS brought them in from Vietnam I think. He has two 20 gallon tanks that are full of them. He has had them for about a year, all sorts of colors, pinks, gold, forest green, bright green, reds, all sorts of patterns. Not many people want them.
My guess is that they are rare because there is not much of a demand for them. The first batch he got in by mistake. They were labeled as baby "Pizza anemones". Somebody from this list bought a bunch of them, so he ordered some more. He still has about 90% of the ones from that second order. There was one that was cherry red and another that had a lot of blue in it that eventually sold after a few months.

Those are so called ricordea florida anemones. in germany u would pay for a small ordinary one about 15 bucks - for a really beautiful one about 50-70 bucks...

ricordeas arent the same^ these anemones are very nice, also called tapetum anemones. anyway, i would love to try one but the only tank i could put it in is a 2g(3g total) with 20w pcs. i was told the lighting wouldnt be enough though :(

Looks like a million little eyes staring at you...very cool. I have been looking for someone who has these to sell. So if anyone finds an online vender (for less than 50 bucks) or has been fragging them you should share! I know a bunch of people at nanoreef.com did a group order and say that they are easy to frag. They look perfect for my tank...

I talked to some people who have them and they supposedly are model citizens and don't move around. I've been keeping my eye open but I agree...not worth $90.

you should be able to find them for under $30 from a local reefer
That would be for the smaller variety.

Has anyone confirmed the 4-5"ers divide in captivity?

i have heard of splits and simple fragging like you would with a ricordea
The little versions that seem to max at 2" or the larger versions that have only been around for the last 18 months or so?

IME: Having had both types for quite some time, splits do not seem common place with the larger holotype; it they naturally divide at all.

you can try doing a search on nano-reef where there are a few decent threads on them. the splits were uncommon but fragging seemed successful.

Track tapetums there and numerous other locations, but most don't track the differences in the varieties and I have yet to see a confirmed natural division of the larger specimens.

If someone finds one, post a link ;>)
