That was my old reef a couple of years ago. Not all SPS but quite a few acros were in there along with the usual montiporas. You have to look but most of the SPS was clustered around the metal halide pendants hanging over the tank.
Anyway, I dont know what qualifies as low-tech but here is how the tank was set up:
55 Gallon, HOB overflow (added in last few months of tanks exisitence) to a 20 gallon sump, mag 5 return pump, seaclone skimmer, 4 maxijets for flow. 4 x 65 W PCs and 2 X 175 W Halides. Manually dosed kalkwasser and/or B-ionic.
Pretty low tech compared to most setups around now....even my system is using a lot more tech.

Ya, apparently it can. I normally wouldnt've have ever thought, and or I would assume that there would have been potential for having out of contral algae or at least a consistant battle. But a friend of mine in our local club has a 30g lit by 240w of PC,no sump, no fuge, and uses tap water to mix his salt with. He has a very clean(of algae), vibrant in color stony corals, that amazingly grow very fast. The two things that I know allow him to do this are frequent waterchanges(weekly) and lots of flow.
Heres a couple of older pics of his tank:
Anyways yes tap can be used but its like playing russian roulette you never ever know when those harmful contaminates are going to build up to a point that they will harm something or it might be that day some arsenic gets through .
IMO if people go to such great lengths to spend so much money on corals/fish and equipment why provide sub par water for them to live in ?
Having my ro/di is more than peace of mind its there to help protect my animals and provide them with what they deserve.
Ok guys, these pictures were taken on May 18th, 2003. This is an old tank that I had incredible sucess with minimalistic work.
150 gallon with 2 external overflows to a 20 gal long with a RIO (uggghhhhh) return pump. There were about 3 powerheads in the tank ( 800's). My lighting was a Hamilton set up with 2 VHO actinic and 3 175W 10 Ushio's. I had about 1 1/2 inches of crushed coral. I never added any additives EXCEPT I was religious in adding aragamite to my top off water that I poured into the display tank.
No flow
Minimal light
No DSB
****es me off. I have all the toys now that I can afford them, and I can't get anything to grow like it did back when I didn't really know much.
This 125 gallon belongs to a friend. It is set up with 2- 250 watt mh with two 110 watt vho. It uses filtered tap (not RODI nor RO), 55 gal sump, no fuge, ASM G3 skimmer. He does water tests and doses seldom and is gone from home except on weekends. Nitates run on the high side, full of mejano and aptaisia. SPS thrive in his tank.
