Minimalistic multichip DIY LED build

Hey guys

I've been quiet for a while and it is due to an emergency surgery on Monday afternoon. Has been in the ICU until Thursday night - is now in the hospital and finally got my computer up and running. Will probably be here for a while - at least a few more days. The disease is called Intestinal volvulus - and believe me - it hurts ......

There are some who asked questions I did not answer - will try to answer them later in the week ahead

Sincerely Lasse

Sorry to hear about your illness Sir, I hope you recover very soon and we wish you all the best health in the world. Get well soon......

Tahir

When you say more than one, do you mean the 3 watters, multichips or D, all the above? Just trying to get a visual of your setup.

Does anyone have a 100w 20k next to a 100watt 455? I am curious how they blend and disco.

They don't blend very well in my opinion, but many people are happy with alternating fixtures (blu/wht/blu/wht). The directional nature of LEDs also creates blue & white zones in your tank so unless you are rotating the fixtures on a mover, the corals will be adversely affected.

Hybrid (mixed) chips are the way to go and cost should be about the same.

question when your building your fixture why would anyone wanna have over 5 power cords isnt their a dimmable driver that will work many 50 watt royal blue multi chipe or a dimmable driver that will run many 50 watt 10,000 k cool white leds?

There's no need to have 5 power cords - if you select your drivers carefully RE: voltage, then they will dim the channels to the point of being off, and you can put at least several drivers to a power cord. Assuming the wattage/current draw isn't excessive for one plug.. You wouldn't want to put more than 400w to a plug if you plan on switching the lights with an apex or reef angel, for example.

Well, thats not sounding like I wanted :( . I would do a hybrid chip but I would need a 100w-white and 100w-blue independently drivable.

hey does anyone happen to have the demensions for the holes i need to drill/tap for the 20w leds that ac-rc sells? i havent got my leds yet but i would like to go ahead and drill and tap my heat sinks

Hello, What a great DIY Project,

Im just buying the bits for mine now, Can anyone tell me what size wire i need for 5 10w LEDs in series?

Thank you

Problem with that reefurchin is getting a heatsink that can take the heat away from it.

hey, well, not really because I would not be runnig both channels on full. It would be maybe 1/2 to 3/4 blue during work hours and normal white blend when I am home and maybe back to blue for an hour before I go to bed.

Hi Tom, did you try out your Zalman yet?

I just got home and the first things I did were test my water with my new red sea kit (ca/mg/kh) and found as expected, levels are all low! Even my KH was low, 7.7 and I have been dosing equivalent of +1 dKH a day. Haven't dosed Ca or Mg yet b/c I didn't have a test kit.

Also got a reef angel and have dosing pumps on order, and I'll be able to hook up my ATO pump now too.

Anyways, the plan is to do some cleaning tomorrow (holiday) and then work on a single dream chip setup, don't know if I'll get it all how I want though. I have my 12 conductor wire, 1 wire temp sensors, 70C cutoffs all here, and good thermal paste too.

Wow Tom,...All you need is auto fish feed, and the only other thing you have to do, is look at it !:crazy1:
Are you going to set the D.C. up in the pvc pipe with your Zalman? I'm curious what temp. the cooler can hold the chip to.
Also what are you using for your 12 conductor wire? Have a Good Day---Rick
