JimKelly12203 - what’s wrong with you man....... regardless where or how anyone gets their money from, and regardless of how they choose to spend it, this ReefCentral is supposed to be above judging people for their social or economic standing - be they broke or flush for cash..... and the tank owner didn't even post that pic himself.... yet you choose to ridicule him anyway.....
Not very good form I'm afraid..... while your point about money & time affords people the opportunity for bigger and better tanks is true, it is entirely irrelevant in the context of this thread...... and it is equally true that "money does not equal taste".... and even with money, a big thumping SPS TOTM tank does not necassarily make it a "modern design" which is what this thread is about!

I really like the TOTM posted by WZHANG on the first page â€"œ and also really like that little cube posted by CamBarr on the second page. But one of my favourites (even before this thread) is blide’s tank…… I think that really has the “whole package†for me….. presentation inside and out is nice and clean, very defined lines etc.

I have basic tanks, never will get TOTM out of them, doesn't mean I'm not in awe of everyone that has been selected. I'm not sure why people think it's a contest. If people have the money and they put it into their tanks, who are we to judge where they spend their money. This is a great thread, I've definitely enjoyed seeing people push the envelope of minimalism in the tank (particularly in regard to equipment in the tank). Personally, I live in a house that was built at the tail end of the Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau period and we've spent a lot of time & money furnishing and presenting the house in a manner appropriate to the time. So, any of these modern designs would look completely out-of-place in my home.
In fact, as I have the time and money, I'll be working toward the goal of presenting the show tanks in the entryway and parlor in a more vintage manner. I love the tanks that Vintage Aquariums has (had?), but they're just way over-the-top expensive and not necessarily in keeping with the functional aspects I'd want to have.
What I found particularly interesting, though, is the assertion that the Akva-Stabil tank shown above has a modern design. Those metal braces are a direct throw-back to old Victorian aquariums when metal bracing was the only way to shore up the sides of the tank.
I'll likely end up buying a euro-braced tank and then give it a vitage look by adding false bracing. I'm planning to hit the antique stores to get some stained glass panels that I can incorporate into the stand & canopy so they can be back-lit by the tank and sump / fuge lights. I think the flowy lines of the Art Nouveau stained glass would mesh nicely with the aquatic scenery. But I'll still go for simplistic aquascaping and minimal equipment in the tank

Thank you!! Im just glad other people share similar views as it related to modern design and implementation. This thread was created to explore a passion of mine Modern design and architecture.
I agree with the statement that taste doesn't need to be expensive.... not saying that some taste is not expensive, but this thread is not a thread to show off tanks and their dollar amount. this thread was started to discuss and explore modernism as it relates to aquaria.

Speaking of cool i have been reading this blog by Flint&Eric.
Cool blog talking about modernism and aquaria. The thing i like about this blog because it discusses cutting edge advances in the husbandry side of aquaria and also the equipment related to keeping reef aquarea. It also has a great design flair. in some cases if we think about modernism it is about pushing the edge of what is thought to be normal, I think this blog does a great job of depicting that in a visual and text form

Although personally I don't see it. They have a certain non metallic look to them for sure...I guess you could say plastic but that is an aesthetic choice (one that I love) I think to keep them looking sleek and simple.
Or are you looking at other lights?
The only other ones I have seen in this thread anyways are very expensive looking aluminum pendants with built in LCD monitors...Not exactly cheap looking
Only reason I ask is that I see the exact opposite when I look at most all Elos products, especially the lighting. It looks pretty expensive to me.
I was talking about aquaplanet line, I was suprised that with such high end product they even sell lights with a plastic-like material, their aquaplanet are definately not made of metal. I haven't seen their aluminum pendant you refer to, I bet those are nice! I was considering getting these at one point, but stuck to getting geisemanns
