Modern Reef Aquariums

I thought I would post a few pics of our current tank/room since we are just in the process of packing it up and moving. We finally bought our first place! Its pretty small but its a beautiful condo with a very industrial feel and look. All exposed, finished concrete walls, floors, 16' ceilings. Exposed plumbing and gas lines...you get the idea. Much more "personality" than our current building. Anyways we felt like with the inspiration and advice from people in this thread, our current place got a little more modern and are pretty sure the place will be even more modern!

A while back I posted pics of the room/tank and here is what it has evolved into...a little more modern maybe??? Maybe not so much but nicer for sure and thats thanks to everyone here.

I had also never posted a pic of my lighting. Only one 250 watt MH in the hood angled from left to right. Lots of shadows and natural looking light. Hard to tell in the pics though...

I will post the drawings I have done of the concept for the new tank. Well it will be the same tank but I am building a new stand and the lighting will be the same 250watt MH but I am fitting it into a beautiful Acro Floor lamp instead of a canopy. Stand will be painted with car paint as a few others have done.

Thanks again guys for all the inspiration!

Hah :) Nice

See photoshop can be used for things other then oversaturating your corals :)

Justin did you paint the stand/canopy black ? I thought it was white. I like it very much better.

Good luck with the move. I just moved and i hated moving with a tank. Dont ignore this advice :

Have a Lot of water ready. Both salt and RO. Dont count on the LFS for saltwater as they might well give you water with messed up salinity like they did with me.

I'm in the prcess of building a modern reef. It's 90g (48x24x18), starphire on 3 sides, rimless. The stand will be modeled after the elos stands and it will have a floating canopy. :)

Tank arrived today!

Oh and one more thing not to ignore,...either throw out the old sand or wash it very well. All the crap is going to be stirred up and you will end with an algae bloom,....at the least

Justin congrats on the new place. A friend of ours has an arco and they all laughed when I said, I wanted to retro a DE halide in it for a reef tank

I got the same reaction when I told the salesman at the store I ordered it from! He seemed to think it was a great idea but of course he really wanted the sale...

I actually had the socket and bulb from the MH with me in the store to make sure it would even work. Its going to be tight but it should just work out.

The tank is hopefully going to be a room divider with the arco reaching from the back of the tank, across and shining light down and back across the tank...if that makes sense. LOL.

Mac Inger thanks for the advice. We have a few weeks to move in before we have to be out of our current apartment, so I am going to have a temporary tank at the new place already set up. Our new place is only a 5 minute drive away too, so its not a big deal.

The display tank will not be set up for quite a while after moving in because I have to build a new stand and re plumb it. Luckily Home Depot is just down the street from the new place :)

Ive been looking at the Arco too just for that purpose. I am not a Huge fan of the arco myself (dont shoot me !!!)

I went at Ikea yesterday and they had a knock off of the arco with a chinese lantern type thing hanging on it. So i bought it and took it home but it wouldnt hold the wait of a MH reflector.

I would really like to get one of these surgical lights, but damn theyre expensive:

Two other ideas i had were,...Manequin hand
Arm%20Slightly%20Cracked.jpg

coming from the wall holding the reflector (or two hands),...only problem arms are not long enough...

Or a film set C-stand,..since im in the film business,....like this

What i would really like would be an articulating arm,...coming from the side wall. Like the surgical lamp arms,...in the style of Bjorks "All is full of love" video.

Im kinda tired of the ceiling hanging light,....Anybody has any ideas ???

What about one of those brackets that allow you to secure a monitor to the end of a desk or a nearby wall? They can articulate some, and if you removed the flat shelf that the monitor fits on, you might be able to create a connection for your lighting. It would surely have the strength necessary.

I looked into those too Marc,...but theyre usually pretty short.

The other thing i looked at that might work for some of you guys that i thought were pretty cool :

This one looks made for holding a mh reflector,..again too short for me.

The other really nice/functional idea (i think)

I just wish they all were a little taller/longer

mac inger.. i was thinking about the architect lamp or table lamp with MH for my new concept tank.

do you think some parts of the lamp will rust overtime?
