Thanks for all of the great info everyone! It doesn't appear to be hurting the coral, but I think I may just snap them off and discard them.

I cannot get a meaningful picture of mine, no matter what I do. Camera phone is not cutting it. But suffice to say they start out thin like the previously posted ones, then thicken over time.

Pictures in post 9 look like and encrusted vermetid snail tube;not a worm tube or unassisted columnar growth.IMO. I'd guess sometimes the encrusting monti may can cover the opening making the structure useless for the vermetid. Take a look at night to see if the vermetid puts out a mucous net to see if it's using the structure.

First off, I only now realized that I spelled Monti wrong in my original post. My apologies.

I ended up snapping off the columns and got to see the vermetid snails retracting. I guess the coral just grew with the tube. Upon further inspection of the tank, I now see that I have more than enough Vermetids growing on my live rock. Some call it an infestation, others say they don't mind them. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Your call. They can get messy. The mucous net catches a lot of particulate organic matter. They can also start to clog up overflows,,etc. If you remove them dump them in water right away or they'll stink up the room.

That would be a sight to see!

I'll just leave it for now. I have never seen them become active during feeding time, so I don't think that I will reduce the amount of food I give my fish. I will just work to eradicate those that have taken up residence on my coral.

Thanks again to everyone who helped!
