Moving a tank with a deep sand bed?

I m thinking about moving next year, already the big question is tormenting me. I would like to keep my sand, so the question is: How do you move a tank with a deep sand bed without having a crash? If i keep the sand in the tank and try to move it, wouldn't the weight from the sand damage the silicon from the tank?

Take the sand out of the tank. Cooler should do just fine. Rinse if old or full of dark detritus.

The last time I tried moving a tank with a DSB (back when I used sand), the tank burst. I think it was a 30g all glass. Wouldn't recommend leaving it in there. The cooler is a good suggestion.

Could you please elaborate when you say to wash the sand please. I am guessing to wash it with salt water and then store it in the cooler?

Holly.....! That would be my nightmare, that was my fear. Good to know!

Just to reinforce what others have already said, definitely take out the sand before moving the tank...leaving it in could create uneven pressure on the bottom of the glass which could lead to it breaking! Good luck with the move!

I just dumped out my 10 yr old sand and called it a day lol. It was 2 or 3 am in the morning and I just didn't want to deal with all that mess.

unfortunately the key of a DSB is to leave it undisturbed, once you try to take it out you will face a toxic soup that would be very difficult if not impossible to avoid. IME I have had better luck dumping most of the old sand except for a few inches that I would rinse lightly with tank water and would lay first in the new tank to seed the new sand that I put on top.

+1 I never use sand after a break down except for some to seed the tank.

Thank u guys for all the tips. It s clear and inevitable that I will have to get rid of my previous sand. Well better the sand than the livestock right?
