Mr. Peanut's paradise (40Breeder)

A deep sad bed of 5+ inches deep will create anoxic regions (low to zero oxygen areas) for denitrifying bacteria.

One of the by-products of one type of denitrification generates hydrogen sulphites/sulphites (I forget which).

It is that rotten egg smell. In tanks, DSB are usually slowly stirred up by sand sifters critters that help release trapped nitrogen gas and the sulphur compounds back into the water stream. Once released, the sulphur eventually out gasses out of the water.

When you mix up a sandbed, too much sulphur gets released too fast.

That is my guess why you had the crash.

I can't imagine how stirring up a DSB can take out everything that fast? Even zoas/palys? Sorry to hear about that.

My zoas and palys are not gone yet just closed up.... I did notice some were opening up but not much.... I hope not all is lost but I do know my plate corals are either dead or dying as well as my bright green Formosa and green slimmer.

I did notice a weird smell sort of like a dead animal I thought maybe it was another dead rat outside my room. Guess I just learned from my mistake, now have to wait until its ready again to add new corals.... Just hope my fish won't die :worried::worried:

If you have nasty stuff in your water I would do a WC today and run the RO until tomorrow and then do another. .02

cool thanks for the reply Ron.... i thought maybe the site was down or something since it seemed pretty dead all day long :D I hope some of my corals make it through if not i will have to wait to get some more at the next swap.

I do a phosophate and nitrate test, actually I'd check all your parameters. Keep doing water changes until your parameters are on point.

i will make sure to do that and check them tomorrow.... i think also i will wait a few days until a new water change just to allow time for the old water to mix in with the new water. i wont add anything new until it is all stable and will support new corals.

New update: some of the zoas and palys are starting to open, bad news all my Monty's, plates and sps is D.E.A.D. :( lost one head of my frogspawn so far.

I took the sump apart today.... Turns out I grabbed the wrong silicone at Home Depot.... Tomorrow I will put it back together and allow plenty of curing time.... Then I have empty the tank, rinse the rocks, throw out the sand and dead corals and fill again.... Should be up and running again by next weekend.... Really appreciate it bro I'll let you know when I will need those canaries.... For now I am putting what looks survivable into a 20 long I fixed up for my niece but has not used it yet.

Been at it most of the day and finally I have my tank up and running. Bare bottom and I redid my rock work a little different. Criticize away guys and gals.
