The mag would seriousally decreace the performance of your skimmer as well as heating your water up more than the GenX. Can you install fans blasting on the water's surface? That helps tuns on my tank.

My water is normally 78-79Ã"šÃ‚°. With the skimmer running for several hours, the water ends being up around 84-85Ã"šÃ‚°. I'm not sure how long it takes for the water to reach that temp, but it didn't take too long for the temp to drop back down to normal after I turned the skimmer's pump off and put a few ice packs in the tank.

I think the previous page of this thread has pics of my setup. My tank is 36" long, as is my stand. I have the pump mounted to the bottom of the stand. It creates a lot of noise through vibration, but I can probably fix that by placing something like a mousepad inbetween the pump and the stand.

I'll try running a small fan over the water in the sump and see how that works out. If not, I might just add a second sump to place underneath the skimmer (see my other pictures to get an idea), and then run a pipe from that secondary sump to my main sump at an even level. That way I can have the skimmer drain into that secondary sump and give the water a little more time to release some heat while moving back to the main sump. It'd be easier to mount fans on something like that, as well.

Does that sound like it'd be worth my time if placing a fan over my sump doesn't help much?

blazemore, a few suggestions FWIW:

1. Is your fuge light off during the day and on at night?
2. Add more water to your fuge... More water= longer to heat.
3. Add a fan onto your sump.
4. Plumb the Gen-x pump outside or away from the tank.

Just a few suggestions:)

I found that pointing a fan at the Gen-X pump has helped a lot. I think the warm air it generates is what was heating up the water in my sump. All is well, now. :)

does anyone have detailed instructions on how to do the U-tube mod. i read in a thread awhile back that it lowers the amount of bubbles leaving the skimmer but I dont know how to do it.

Go to steve68's www above one of his posts, he has detailed pics on there. It takes about six minutes once you have the parts:)

And if you still need a little help it's discussed quite a bit about 40 pages back and hit and miss since then:)

It's really easy to do though.

so you have to attatch it directly to the beckett like this?

DSC06546.jpg

Or do you just attatch it directly to the bulkhead?

what size pvc do you use?

Nope. That was his first design. Just go here and scroll down about half way and you will find it...

reefman77,

what size skimmer you thinking on doing this?

I try it with a mr-2 and it was too short, too much turbulence, then I added a 8" raiser and now its much better,

steve has mr-2 and a 12" extension, with that mod,

sam

I have an MR-1 so I guess it wont work.

are there any other ways to get rid of all the bubbles leaving the skimmer. heres a pick of my setup

reefman77,

that mod doesn't eliminated all the bubbles, but helps greatly,

steve and myself, we are using pressure rated pumps, and in your pic, I see a mag internally, that way I would try it and see how it works if doesn't work its just a few bucks in pluming

filter socks helps with bubbles, sections helps greatly too, low flow through sump, you don't need much anyway, unless you are counting on the return pump to add to the main tank circulation,

diffuser plate

diffuser plate

:) filter sock & baffles are the only other way to rid of the micro bubbles.
steve there is a other way to slow down the bubbles and make the beckett work better,is to add a diffuser plate and cup were added to a beckett skimmer. You can read more on the diffuser plate at my needle wheel non dart driver skimmer.I have ask Andy to build me a beckett skimmer with a diffuser plate ,i hope he can build one as it will make the beckett skimmer even better than what it is.

thats true.
i have been thinking about making a diffuser plate for a long time it's just one of those mods that would make a lot of sense.

Steve the first diffuser plate that i saw was used in a cooling tower made by the Marley cooling tower co 55 years ago. It was used because the tower could be made smaller and do more this is the same thing that is done with a skimmer.

Steave the new skimmer is to be 34 in high and recirculating with a 8 in dia tube and a 12 dia cup.The becketts are to be going in through the side of the 8 in tube into the cup under the diffuser plate. The pump for the becketts is a iwaki MD55RLT ,feed pump is a eheim 1260.

Steave the skimmer will all so have the Bubble Lift system that cleans out the riser that goes into the collection cup,it can be put on most MRC skimmers that have all ready been built.
