How Often do you guys clean out your skimmers??? I just installed mine a week ago and it is filthy already..
Do you clean below the quick release? Or just the neck up?

I clean the neck up every 3 or 4 days. Sometimes I let it go a week. With any skimmer cleaning the neck more often is going to make it perform better.

i try to clean it every 2 days but sometimes i just done have enough time, if i only had a real job with real hours.

Would it be feasible to upgrade an MR-2 with another beckett without using the column riser? I'd like to keep my skimmer under the tank but kick up my performance another notch.

Thanks!

Jamie

Ok, I know ive got to be doing something wrong, but Ive had it up to my ears with this skimmer.

I cant get the damned thing set up. The skimmer is sitting on a cabinet about 4 feet up to the left of my tank. I cant figure out how to plumb the god damned thing. My latest attempt was to get a 1.5" barbed fitting comming straight out of the gatevalve turned 45* to the side with 1.5" flexable PVC. Its more unstable now then ever.

Ereefic you were spot on with the syphon thing. When the tube goes below the water, it sucks my skimmer box dry. If it stays above the water line, the lowest my water will go is 3" above my black box.

I also tried two mods. I tried the U tub mod and it failed miserably. The water in the skimmer was ridiculously unstable. Rocked back and forth in the tube and produced NO bubbles.

I also added the riser for the injector. The top of the injector is even with the top of my skimmer.

I have NO clue why im not getting any bubbles. Maybe I didnt let it run long enough. I really would like to fit this thing into my sump, but I have no clue how it will perform if its under the water. Nor do I even know if it would fit in there.

Either way, not to happy with my situation. To top it off MRC is not taking calls until the 10th.

To avoid these problems you need a syphon break right off the skimmer

then you need it to go 45 deg down right off the syphon break.

Anyone know how to quiet down my injector, it is really loud and rattling? I thought at first it was the pump, but sure enough its the injector, the water spraying makes it rattle, any tips?

I agree with Wiskey. I have my skimmer sitting with the gate valve more or less even with the top of my sump so i just run out to it with a 90 pointing the water down and I have no problems with water fluctuation. If i was above the top of the sump i would do the same thing wiskey has done.

What are you using to push your skimmer with? I am using a hammerhead that feeds my tank as a return and is tee-d to the skimmer and when its producing bubbles the water line is right at the top of the black box, thats with 2 injectors and the gate wide open. IT fills the tube with bubbles in minutes and is normally skimming the tank again with in half an hour. If i shut the air off then the water line will rise to 1.5-2 inches off the top of the black box. I forget exactly, its been ages since i looked at it for that kind of thing. If you are 3 inches of water with the gate valve wide open then something sounds wrong to me.. Just My experience maybe thats normal and i have an odd ball?

I just had to take mine apart since it got clogged with chaeto, and I noticed a few things. The center piece that looks like ball and arrow fits into two slots on the outer two shells, there is a small protrusion on two of the blades of the arrow, these fit into the matching slots on the outer shell pieces. I had to take it apart several times to figure out just how it went back together since I wasn't careful enough when I took it apart and couldn't see how it was put together originally. If it is put together using the protrusions and slots there is no way it can rattle IMO. If it does it isn't put together right or it has worn down somehow, mine is very solid now and I can't see how it could rattle.

On another note, I did my regular tank cleaning today, stirring up all the settled detritus. I wanted to see how the MR2 did with all the extra funk, first cleaning since I installed it. After I got the clog out of the beckett, which caused it to work very poorly, it has gone crazy pulling stuff out. I am pleased with this hunk of plastic. ;)

I just got my Dwyer air meter

My PCX-40 pump pulls a max of 40 schf

but the skimmer runs better around 30 schf

What are other people getting?

I am looking into getting an MRC MR-2. What size pump does it need? And are MRC skimmers better then ETSS skimmers? I cant decide bewteen the 2.

Send me your air meter and i'll let you know. :D

It would be interesting to know, but i'm not willing to drop the cash for 2 (dual injectors) just for a number. The skimmer is ripping right along and that's all I need to know. :)

PCX-55 or equivelant (pressure rated pump) would be a good choice. Don't know about the ETSS skimmers so can't help you there.

i used to have an ETSS & i ended up making it a beckett & everyone that i know that has an ETSS makes a beckett for them they just run better that way.
all i can say is MY MR-2 is the best skimmer i have ever bought.

Ezhoops do u have the black beckett injector or the gray one?
IME only the gray ones make noise, all u have to do is superglue one side so it does not move & so u can take it apart.

I have black one? super glue, oh boy that worries me.

any other ideas?

how and where do I super glue

I'll call andy on monday and see what he says

The only reason why I wouldnt get an MRC skimmer is because they require such exspensive pumps. Isnt there any cheaper pumps?

u can use a cheap pump & it will work but it works much better with a pressure pump.
i used a mag 9.5 on a bekett & it worked better then the needle wheel pump i had, it was an old MTC that i put a beckett injector on.

when u take the beckett apart the piece that goes in the center superglue it to one side only this way u can take the beckett apart & clean it next time.
