RGibson: That's another question I was looking for a good answer. Mine also forms foam much better with the lid off the top. Screw on the top nice a tight and the foam just collapses. I would love to fix this. Please post the fix. Seems to be getting to much back pressure from the drain hose so I installed a wider hose and got some improvement, but would like more. These skimmers seem to need to breath better. Thanks.

Beckett do not work well with back pressure the drain line to let out waste and air is just good for waste only to fix this you need to put a hole in the lid and add a air turn off just like is used in mrc large waste container so when the cup fills up the air will turn off the skimmer. This should be put on all beckett skimmers.I have used one on my skimmer years and it has work well. There are many things that can be done to a beckett to make it work better it very little cost. Some of things that are on the MRC skimmer came from me and there is more to come. A self cleaning riser is one and it can be added to the skimmer that are allready out there.I can not tell you when Andy will bring out .

Many thanks to you RGibson! Mine is an MR-4 dual beckett with an extra 12 inch riser run by a Sequence Barracuda for my 600 gallon system. I would appreciate a picture if possible. Picture worth a thousand words you know. The problem with the hole in the top would be foam wanting to go that direction too? No? How do we prevent this? I was thinking of this same solution but wasnt sure how and thought I might be wasting my time or ruining my skimmer. My next problem is how to make these things run cleaner. So more foam ends up the the collection chamber instead of coating the top riser. Mine is begging for cleaning after 2 to 3 days. I would love to have it run for a week or more without this need. A self cleaning riser is definately for me. Many thanks again.

cweder i do not have a picture, hear is a list of parts to build a air turn off to put in the top
1 in double slip bulkhead fitting
1 in pvc pipe 2 in long
11/2 to 1 bushing
11/2 in coupling
Table tennis ball from walmart cost $1.75
go by the list starting from the top to put it together.
The table tennis ball goes inside the 11/2 couping and is held in place by a 3/8 wide pvc
I hope this will help you

cweder- the self cleaning riser is call the Bubble Lift cleaning system.I clean out the riser about every 30 days using this system and there are no moving parts inside the skimmer to make the cleaning system work.

We really need some good directions on how to assemble this and some pictures! My skimmer has the same issue when the lid is off, and I want to fix it. But the directions are quite hazy. O)

Rob the wet skim and foam is stop by the ball only the air comes out.

Cool,I think i will make a new lid for my bullet 3 and give it a try.:)

But i will say since adding the riser to the beckett on my MR1, it is still working flawless

RGibson: OK I got the air intake moved outside yesterday. Unfortunately I had to rebuild my pump and a tad bit of oil was needed in the bushings. SO it took awhile to get things skimming right. So far, so good. It seems as though the foam head is more tightly packed. If I don't have to adjust the needle valve this afternoon, then it was a successful operation:)

I went ahead and drilled the hole in the top of MR-4. Attached a
1 inch bulkhead and downsized this to about half inch so something could get down in the collection cup about 2 inches. The fine bubbles are now completely filling the first 12 inch riser. Before I could only get 2 to 4 inches of fine bubbles. Hopefully this will equal more productive skimming. The bad part is I did not have enough clearance at the top of my skimmer to have some pvc piping sticking out even 2 inches, so I had to take off my extra 12 inch extension riser. and :(

Got any pictures???

__RGibson: so the Bubble Lift self cleaner is available now?

__sellout007: I might attempt pictures tomorrow. Dont hold your breath. I dont use the waste collector. My waste drains directly into a near by sink. So the extra air vent doesnt need the air valve shut off (ping pong ball) in my case. The waste collector caused even more back pressure, a whistling sound from all the air going through it, and the ping pong ball would close off the air prematurely or not completely when needed. I was going to use the auto shut off valve (ping pong ball from my unused one, but it is too big to fit inside the collection cup. It would have to be modified. Do you still want pictures? What exactly would you want to see?

I am just a little confused.

Does this mod go on a waste collector? Or on the lid to my MR2? I already have one on my waste collector, but do see what you guys are talking about when I take my lid off. The skimmer seems to produce better.

Im just not entirely clear on how to drill my MR2 and where the placement goes and what not.

Thats what I thought.

Now im just a bit confused on how it all gets set up. O) If I saw a picture of one set up, I would have no problems. Im horrible at doing things from words. I need pictures.

Sellout, another thing you can try before doing that is see if you can get the drain fitting that will hold a bigger diameter hose, but have the same thread size. That should do the trick, and is cheap enough to try out.

I had the same problem on my recir. beckett. Just upped the drain fitting to 3/4" hose and it's all better.

Good call. Ill have to stop at lowes and see if they have a larger size.

Do you know off hand what size the threads are on the skimmer collection cup?

Id still like to see a picture of this whole set up. Especially how the ping pong thing is set up.
