So far my recirc MRC has been pretty sensitive...

I guess that eliminates that thought...

I must be lucky. Even when I clean mine it's skimming again in 5 minutes. I wish Andy would chime in like he used to. He might have an explanation.

granted i dont have tons of experence with this skimmer. Im running the MR-2R with a genx 70 hd (1500 gph@31' head) and a mag 5 feed pump. The skimmer skims great, but if i touch the water the head colapses. I think that i have it set to dry, that was a overreaction to the flood i had yesterday when it was set to wet. It could also be that the everything is barley broke in, the skimmer has been running since monday, the tank has been set up since sunday.

I have to have the air almost turned all the way down, and the gate valve wide open, for this skimmer not to flood. That is of course due to the pump i have as a recirc im sure. The water in the first riser looks like whip cream.

Where is your water level with the recirc pump off? You're running a big pump for that skimmer!

I have my water level 8" above the base. My air valves are three and a half turns off the closed position. I run so I fill a WC4 everyday. That's kind of dry for the amount of water I'm skimming(350g), but it seems to be doing fine in the 3 months I've been running it.

I cant believe that 2 drops of Selcon in a 180 gallon tank is enough to make my MR-2 go dead. That selcon must be some highly concentrated stuff.

My water level is somewhere in the 2-3 inch range with the air off. The gate valve has to be completly open. The water level in the sump is about 10", which is why the water level in the skimmer is about 10". The reason im running that large pump is that i was originally planning on running the skimmer outside of the stand, and i have a 18" extension for it. I changed my mind and put it under the stand, i didnt think that big pump would hurt.
So far, the skimmer is more sensitive to head collapse then my aqua c ev180, but, overall i like this skimmer better. I think it looks better, i like Andy, and obviously it will skim more then the old skimmer. It is running on a 200 gallon display, 30 gallon fuge, and a 30 gallon sump.

I see :) I was running a Deltec AP851 before, and I love the way a beckett skims compared to a NW. You have much more control with a beckett IME.

JMO but... I think you're losing some control without that additional riser and using the larger pump. If you're dead set on keeping it the way you have it, I would consider a smaller pump.

Why did you decide not to run it as planned?

EDIT: With that additional riser your head collapse wouldn't be as bad. You might lose 6" for a short period, but it would keep skimming.

I thought you couldnt have to big of a pump on a beckett :)
I changed my mind because i wanted it to look cleaner. I wanted as much equipment as possible hidden, and i think the riser was way overkill for the size tank im trying to skim.

anyone using Sequence pumps with MRC?
I'm useing a seq3200 on my mr2 and return ... working well.
and returns has two penductors.

My mrc skimmer is getting less sensitive as the tank breaks in and the skimmer. Im also running the water in the 3-4" range in the neck. It still collapses, but bounces back rather fast. I built me a overlow chamber with a ping pong check valve. I would have had a flood this morning if i didnt build that. for somereason my skimmer decided to overflow last night. The bad part is, i didnt notice what was wrong with the skimmer for like five minutes. There was hardly any water in the skimmer box at all, and i was checking the gate valve, what really stumped me was the waterlevel in the skimmer was lower then the sump water, then i looked over at my container and it was full and under pressure:) Thank god i got that small project over with.

Just ordered an MR-2,after not keeping up to speed on my tank for several months its time to get back on track.

well, i ordered the MR-2 with a blue line 55,one of the emplyees made the recommendation over the gen-x pump.now for the question.

Does any one have a drawing or photos of a diy waste collection that could help me make one. I'm planing on using a salt bucket.

my sump is in the basement, so i just leave my waste line dangling about 5" above the bottom of a bucket. when the waste water gets too high, it shuts off the becket just as effectively as a ping pong ball apparatus. and it's easier to clean the tower and empty the bucket.

If you want to go the DIY ping pong route just look at one and copy it. That's much easier than getting someone to describe it to you plus you will have to work out what to use depending on what fittings your hardware store has. You will need 1.5 " pvc for the ping pong ball to sit in and a reducer for it to hit when the container is full.

drstupid, so the becket shuts off when it reaches the the output of the waste line?

fishdoc- basically the bucket has to be air tight is that correct.pvc parts are not a problem as long as its not unusual.

any photos anyone?

unless you modify your skimmer, the basic principle is: if air can't escape out the drain line, the becket won't skim. with the ping pong ball scheme, air escapes around the top of the ball until the waste level pushes the ball up and closes off the vent hole. this is great for a small waste collector tucked under your sump that won't stink up the living room.

if you just dangle your return line in the bucket, once the waste level gets high enough no air can escape and you've accomplished the same thing. my skimmer's in the basement, so it's very rare the skimmate smells worse than the cat boxes.

not as sexy, but it works. i'm a big fan of occam's razor.

Pretty much but it doesn't have to be perfect.

a big thanks to all for the info and pic.

I would go with the dangling hose in a bucket, which is simplicity at its best, however I feel that once the wife gets a wiff of the pleasant aroma, I'd be the one dangling.

there have been times while cleaning the present skimmer the wife would wonder " what the hell died in here,is that you?" my response "I think its coming from outside".I don't think I could hide an open bucket for long.

once again thanks for the input.

that aroma does help keep the dogs away from the cat boxes. my wife appreciates the fact that she can't smell crunchy tooties rolls when getting doggie kisses.
