...that when you receive an answer that is not quite the one you wanted, or seems a little off topic from your question, the appropriate response is not "You blithering idiot, I asked...[fill in blank]," but rather, "Thank you very much, but I'm trying to avoid that. Could you suggest a solution somewhat short of [fill in calamity.]" Or: "Is there any other way that doesn't involve [what you don't want]?"
