MTC skimmer club!

FYI, I'm totally going to pick up the new apex flow monitor 1" and put it on the skimmer pump. I've been tracking flow by watts used but I don't know exactly what that flow is. I know the air draw so this will complete the full picture. Which in the end is nothing more then for my curiosity and entertainment and not really practical. :)
 
Well finally got my Jecod DCS 12000, to replace my Mag 18. Just installed it, will report back with any improvements.

Interested to see which pump performs better for you. The mag 18 and the jebao 12,000 are the 2 pumps I was looking at running. Sent MTC an email last night about ordering!

It is somewhat counterintuitive that the power draw on a pump declines with back pressure - you'd think it would be the opposite. Whenever I have tested pumps, whether DC or AC, they always draw less with greater backpressure.
Prior post is correct, the back pressure on the pump is overwhelmingly the venturi - just look at the ID at the 'pinch' if you have any doubts. That's why personally I've never bothered trying DC pumps on these skimmers (either beckett or mazzei) as they don't handle pressure all that well.

Well its only been about 3 hours since running the Jebao, and I can already tell its producing more waste. It has a steady drip into waste container, where as the mag 18, it was inconsistent with the drips.
 
This morning I checked the waste collector and it at least doubled what the mag 18 produced. I didn't really expect this much improvement. But I will take it :)

Thats what I love about these skimmers....need more performance ? just get a bigger pump...no need to buy another skimmer...This will probably be the last skimmer I will ever buy, and its built to last. And I have bought a lot of skimmers. Last one was a Vertex Alpha 200, and it is out performing it..... no joke....

Good to know. I think the same on my HSA-1000. Yesterday arrived the new Mag24 that will replace a Mag12. Very good skimmers.

What is everyone using for a skimmate container for the skimmer? Debating whether I want to order the MTC one or not.
 
I use a two liter soda bottle and but it in a 5 gallon bucket in the event of a skimmer gone wild.

Meant to comment on this before ....

I ran an older HSA-1000 like yours for many years; best thing I ever did for it was to order the newer beckett assembly. Makes cleaning it much easier, which in turn keeps it in peak performance. Also, to an earlier question, you can certainly run a beckett skimmer with the beckett below the water line in the skimmer body (just like you can with a mazzei), you just need to make sure the thing is water tight because it will fill with water when the skimmer is off.

Old one gallon juice container with the tube running into it. I'm cheap and would rather spend money on other new toys :)
 
I use a old Vertex Vessel that holds 5 L.
MTC make a waste collector that uses carbon to take care of the stink, and also has a built in shut off. But I find these skimmers not to have any issues with overflows very precise. Thinking about buying one.

Thanks for the comment. I already have a beckett assembly but not the original. I am seriously thinking on get it as clean will be easier as you mentioned.
About run beckett under waterline, i was thinking to mod the skimmer with the beckett i have now and make it as the HSA-1000 as they sell now, with the beckett connected to the box with a bulkhead. Still thinking what to do, but want to test it with the mag 24 before any mod.
 
I like the idea of the having the container to be able to shut off the skimmer. Was wondering if anyone had come up with some type of diy setup.
