MTC skimmer club!

Hi I just got mine MTC mvx skimmer 30. What do you guys tune to stop the micro bubbles from exiting the skimmer? Or do i have to wait for it to break in ?

Once it breaks in it should lessen a bit, but I have microbubbles still. Doesn't make a difference to me though, as water passes through two baffles before the return pump back to the display. Are the somehow making their way back into your display? If not, it really makes no difference.

Letting it break in will help. You can adjust the fittings inside the skimmer. Or reduce flow.

A series of baffles in the sump should trap them.

Oh well guess i will wait. Because i notice most of you guys are letting the fitting inside shoot at 45deg which creates a spiral. If i adjust the fitting to shoot straight up that will stop the micro bubbles. But is there any downside?

So should i tune it to shoot up? Am using fluval sp6.

We won't be able to tell you what will work best on your tank. I'd run it for several weeks as is (unless for some reason the micro bubbles are unbearable) and see what kind of skimmate it produces. Then I'd run it shooting straight up for several weeks and see if you get skimmate that is comparable or at least acceptable to you. If this solves your bubble problem and skims to your liking, go for it.

I'm not seeing how microbubbles in the sump are a problem however. Unless you have some sensitive equipment or sensors that somehow are affected.

Good luck, you've chosen an awesome skimmer in any case...and I've had my fair share of all kinds of skimmers.

sounds like a plan! The thing is the skimmer is not in the sump. Currently just shooting straight up to see what skimate will be produce.

You can raise the height of those fittings.

What do you have the skimmer running in now? Are there microbubbles actually causing problems? If you get it to your sump don't you have baffles that will stop those bubbles from going to the tank? I would not point them straight up myself.

Mine is pointing pretty close to straight forward

Anyone knows whats the reason behind a air tight skimmer cup?
Benifits that I can see

1. Great for those that run ozone. No escaping residual ozone
2. Prevents overflow which is ideal for external skimmers
3. Wife factor, reduces smells

Cons
1. You need to drain to an external collection device to keep pressure down

Skimate question

Skimate question

As I previously posted I previously had a Lifereef skimmer and, although I was very pleased with it, I decided, when it broke and I couldn't stop the leak, to purchase a MTC because of the built quality and good reputation.

The skimate this (MVX 36) produces is a brownish green color with not much odor. The skimate from the Lifereef was much more towards black and a very strong odor.

Any idea why the produce equal amounts the coloring and odor would be different?

Change what's being fed? Add any other kind of filter or media?

Mines a baby poo like substance

LEVEL 9!

I had to clean this out tonight

I can see why those really tall skimmer can have really long necks. This sucker, even though it was running with the water level that low, was pushing foam all the way up to the collection cup still

Then wiping that gunk out of the body was like, well, cleaning up baby poop. Best way to describe it. Smeared supper easy but if it touched anything it just stuck to it. Had its own unique nasty smell though.

Nice visual...
