MTC skimmer club!

Though I have not had my current mazzei-based skimmer overflow, I did have it happen on a few occasions with the HSA-1000. I would personally not run any skimmer to an external reservoir without some kind of shut off. The MTC container is nice with a ping pong ball mechanical shut off. Avast makes one with a pressure switch. You can also use a regular reed style float switch with a controller like apex.

I like the idea of the having the container to be able to shut off the skimmer. Was wondering if anyone had come up with some type of diy setup.

If you look at my pic above, you will see the waste container in the sump just in case of a overflow. I have it raised up with pvc and egg crate.

Use a water level sensor on the bucket, if it fills, activate the sensor, then apex shut down skimmer

I use a davy jones locker from Avast. Air vent in the middle with a carbon chamber on top helps with odor.

It came with a piggy back plug pressure switch but changed it to one I can plug into my apex. You can buy that piggy back plug pressure switcg separate or from Tsunami AT1 which I have several of as well. You can also find the same lid to go on top of a 5g bucket at home depot.

I also installed a horizontal float switch to my apex. This gives me an alert the bucket is almost full. It also reduces the speed of my skimmer's pump which is apex controllable. I usually dump my bucket before it gets that far so I do that programing expecting its probably foaming and running really wet for some reason.

Then the pressure switch is a little higher and will tell the Apex to alert me and shut down my skimmer.

For dumping the contents I put a mj1200 in there and have a 1/2" tube run up, over, and down to a floor drain in the next room. I just flip the outlet its plugged into on from my apex and then switch it right off and the siphon it creates empties it out until the siphon is broken once the bucket is drained.

This is my skimmer with the mag24. Still adjusting it, as i had a chemi clean treatment to erradicate ciano, so, yesterday I made a 20% waterchange and I put the skimmer to work. The black tape show the water level at this moment and the air valve is open at the same way as I used it with the mag 12.

Reef Reactor, When you say you have the Air Valve open. is this a separate control to adjust the amount of air you are letting in ?

On my MVX Model, there is no control for air valve...

Yes, as you can see on the picture on the top of the skimmer there is a white valve with a blue part. If you open it more, more air is sucked, but at the same time, if more air is going on the valve, you can get bigger bubbles, so, you need to control the level of air that valve get to get more air, but small size bubbles.
In my case, with the air the mag12 got, I was getting very fine bubbles. When I changed the pump to mag24, I expected to get more air but with bigger bubbles. I got more air, but same fine size, so I did not adjusted the valve.
When I arrive home later, I will get a picture of the valve for you.
I hope to make you understand this with the explanation as It can be confuse to explain.

No Problem Reef Reactor....I understand what you are saying...We just have different skimmer set ups....I'm sure both types work very well. Appreciate your responses....

Here you have the picture of the air valve.

Yes about set and forget it. In my case, as I changed to a bigger pump I am still dial it. About valves, all the becketts need it, but not on venturis.

Becketts are awesome at pulling in air. Only thing that tipped the scale for me to go with the mazzei injector was the maintenance. Venturi injectors are extremely basic and simple devices.

I've been thinking about how to sub a Beckett into my skimmer in place of the mazzei. Seems overly complicated so I'm laying down hoping the feeling will go away.

On which skimmer? Any picture? It is not complicated
