my 120

Very very nice Adam. Some people use layers of screen and pull one out a week to light acclimate. How many layers i don't know. I did mine by lowering the light cycle. I started at two hours a day and worked it up to eight over two weeks. Hope that helps.

Dave, the two towers I made by drilling holes (maybe 5/8") and using 1/2" PVC rods.

I just used large rocks for the bases rather than pavestones... but I'd suggest pavestones(for stability) if you want them to standalone
I had bought a 50lb caribsea box o rocks. I also used some quikrete hydraulic cement to "glue" some of the small pieces of rockwork together. The whole center structure is just a pile of rocks.

ok, I have emptied the 37 and have the 120 in it's near-final form.
I am having some issues with loud overflows/drains. It may be that I have too high return but i doubt it. I am running two mag 5s as returns, and one has a ball valve I can dial back. I have the adjustable durso standpipes (purchased commercially I believe) and my drains are 1" flex tubing to the sump.
Should the drains end just undet the water surface, deep underwater, or above the surface??
When I run only 1 Mag it's whisper quiet, when I run two, I get bubbling in the sump
Thanks

1" for your drains seams VERY small. As far as how deap into the sump, just under the water line is fine.

I assume thats the stadard size that comes pre-drilled in the tank... how big are yours?? oh and remember I have dual 1" and your 120 has a single .... The bulfheads are 1" the standpipes are actually bigger and then tapered at the bottom

Mine are 1.5" I would have went 2" if I could have. You have 2 1" drains but your running nearly twice the flow with 2 returns. Thats why 1 is quiet but with both it bubles. Thats my guess anyway. I havent seen your tank yet but thats my guess. Its backing up with both returns running and drawing a suction.

You can play with the size of the hole in the top of the durso a little. That may or may not help. I got mine kinda good. Mine will run silent for a long time but like clock work every 10 minutes or so it will flush like flushing a toilet. I dont even hear it any more. If I messed with the hole size I could get it to stop but I dont want to mess with it and make it worse.

Adam,

You did a really nice job on the new system. I really ike the clean look and the front to back depth of the tank.....I can't wait to see it when it matures a little.....

Dave

Adam...from my limited experience, I was getting a ton of noise (and microbubbles) from my drains until I dialed the Mag 9.5 back. Now it is very quiet. I say play with the return flow and I think you will see that it will quiet down. Also...my drains are about 2" or more below the water surface in the sump...I found that it didn't really matter where they were they were going to be loud until we dialed the return pump back.

Thanks Dave,
Yeah Frank, I figure in the end I will have to dial the pumps back, but I just hate to waste flow/energy

I just saw Adam's tank in person. Absolutely stunning job! Great job on the plumbing. Super quiet. A lot of beautiful fish and corals. He also has a little softy tank which was brilliantly designed. He has a horizontal overflow leading to a little 10 gallon sump. Also super quiet. He has a very interesting top off system. he has a large diameter pvc pipe which he painted black next to the tank that serves as the top off water container. Incredibly unobtrusive. Great job Adam. It just needs some more sps:)
