My 168g Cube Build!

It's been cycled for a few weeks. I'm about to pick up a pair of clowns from Bob tomorrow, hopefully!

Nice meeting you George! The clowns are in the tank. Acclimated them and tried to "coax" them towards the torch but they wanted to do their own thing. The other fish paid no attention to them at all. They stick together and they've already started to eat mysis. Thank you, also, for the dragon's breath and cup-o-pods! 8)

Nice meeting you, too, Jon. Thanks for the update. I didn't think to give you a little of the TDO food that was their staple diet; but, really, they should eat whatever you're feeding your other fish. A favorite is chopped clam that I chop fine with a single edge razor on a plastic cutting board.

Following along. I pick up my cube the same size next month (steel stand, 10bulb t5).

Good luck on your build. I would say if I had to do it all over again I probably would have went with a coarser sand. Fiji pink gets blown around easily with gyres.

I learned that lesson with my 120. The solution for me was to get a few pounds of course sand and crushed coral for the high flow spots.

Tank Update:

The clowns I've had for a few weeks have passed away. The first one just stopped eating and died last week. The 2nd one was eating well. Then it stopped eating. It appeared it's face was peeling away and passed away the very next day. I pay very close attention to all of the fish and I know their behavior so when it stopped eating I knew right away. All of my other fish have been thriving. Coral frags are encrusting on the live rock. All my parameters have been steady and normal.

Wow, this is terrible Jon. What you're describing is consistent with the parasite called Brooklynella. Also known as the Clownfish Disease. I assure you those fish didn't have it when they left here, which means you somehow introduced it into your tank with a new fish, coral, snail, or basically anything wet coming from an infected tank. Please read up on it and try to eliminate it. Although it most often infects Clownfish, it can and will infect, and kill, your other fish.

When you're sure you've eliminated it I'll work with you on replacing the Clowns.

Thank you, George. I haven't the foggiest idea of where Brooklynella could come from. I'll do some reading up on it and find out what I need to do to get rid of it. My Vertex Alpha Skimmer just crapped out on me so now I'm quite frustrated at this point. I'm going through a rough patch with my personal life so everything's a little overwhelming right now. I'll keep everyone updated with the tank when I can.

Jon, Slow and steady wins the race. Nothing wrong with letting your tank set a bit. You have done a lot in a little time. Looks great. Can't wait when you start up again. Hope everything works out.

Just a head's up on the dispar anthias.....they like to jump too. I'm not sure if you have a cover over your tank but if not, you should give it some thought. I have an eggcrate cover over both sides of my tank and out of 5 dispar anthias....3 jumped. At different times I found one on top of the eggcrate, one on the floor in my fishroom and the 3rd made it into a bucket, (outside of the DT)...but the bucket was empty. All this with eggcrate covers. I am switching over to the bulk reef supply nylon screen.

Regarding the tangs......I have a 215 gal tank....6 foot length, I have always kept multiple tangs in my tank. Currently I have 2 yellow tangs, 1 purple tang, a large sailfin and a regal tang. I picked up the yellow tang and purple tang from someone in our club who was leaving the hobby so these 2 were not an issue however the smaller yellow tang which already was in my tank gave the new (larger) yellow tang a hard time for about 2 days before relenting. They all get along quite well now.

So I was just thinking. I know I know. I should stop that.

Since my Red Dragon 100 skimmer pump crapped out, I was wondering if I can use my Vectra M1 as the pump? Would there be problems retrofitting it to my Vertex Alpha 170?
