Looe Key reef is the only living barrier reef in North America and is protected as a National Marine Sanctuary...and it is located in your state. Located about 6 miles off shore from Ramrod Key (Mile Marker 27.5) near Key West.

Nice pics, where is that located?

Swimming with large schools of Atlantic Blue tangs on Looe Key reminded me of a previous trip to the Big Island of Hawaii (ie, swimming with large schools of Yellow tangs on the Kona Coast)!!!

I was just snorkeling there yesterday. I stayed in little torch key next to big pine. only about 4 miles off from there. saw alot of the cool stuff that you did and good pictures!

great shots. what kind of camera do you have? i have a sea and sea 35 mmm camera but dont get nearly the quality of picture you have.

For this trip, I used the Olympus SW 1030, which is an inexpensive point & shoot camera (under $400). Overall, the camera does okay in shallow water (20 ft or under) but I am looking to get a better quality camera as well.

Love the pics, especially the ones of the school of Blue Tangs. How deep is it there? I am not the greatest swimmer and usually snorkel in shallower water.

Swimming with large schools of blue tangs is amazing! Looe Key is considered a shallow reef (15 to 30 feet deep in most areas). Great for snorkeling or diving.

I saw sharks everywhere on Looe Key. Lots of Caribbean Reef Sharks and a few Black Tip sharks.

It is easy to tell the difference between sharks ...the Caribbean Reef sharks have dreadlocks....just kidding

We dove Looe Key this spring and I am so jealous you saw a shark!
