My 280g Custom upgrade.....

Not exactly what I expected for FedEx Friday Steve! It's proven technology and some really good PAR numbers at the sand. Might make sure you keep an eye on the coral as I'm not sure what your PAR numbers were before.

I got the LEDs reworked on my fixtures and have a match of a phoenix 14k so we'll see what time tells, looking good so far;)

Thanks Dustin! I raised the fixtures up higher tonight and will do one last par test before sending back the par meter to Henry.

Steve - Nice pick up. I am glad you now have one less variable to worry about.

Thanks Henry!!! At this point I have either removed or changed just about everything that I thought was causing me problems. As much as I liked the dimming features I like the simplicity of on/off again. Your par meter has come in very handy and will be on its way back to you early next week.

Par tests

Par tests

I've had a few days to play around with bulb combinations and par tests with the light. Last night I raised the lights to 14" awl and turned off all of the pumps and these readings are with both 6x80 and 4x80 units on.

Sand bed....
middle 250
front 250
back 215
corners 200

14" below water level
middle 400
front 400
back 365
corners 350

Surface
middle 600
front 600
back 500
corners 400
I noticed a bigger drop in the back and corner at this level I guess because the light needs more room to spread out.

I also did tests with just the 6x80w on, centered over the tank and pumps on. I will post those numbers tonight after I do the tests again with pumps off. Based on the numbers I saw last night I might just run the 6x80w with reefbrites and keep the 4x80w as a back up.

A couple of FTS.....

Once I get the bulb combination and height of the light where I want it, I will start to slowly introduce some sps.

Great looking tank!! It looked good before but the new aquascape makes this tank unique. Good mix of corals too now that you have sps in there

Steve, what are the dimensions of those fixtures?
Corey

Corey...they are both 58.5" long. The 4x80 is 9.5 wide and the 6x80 is 23.5" wide.

Thank you! I am really happy with the new layout and love the rocks.

Great build Steve, I love your rock work.

Thanks Brett. I finally feel like I am back on the right track with the tank.

I took down the 4x80w fixture and centered the 8x80w over the tank and did some par readings. I also changed up the bulbs a little before doing the tests and here is the combination I have now.....

ATI Blue+
Geisemann Pure Actinic
ATI Coral +
ATI Purple +
ATI Blue +
ATI Blue +

Light is hung 14" AWL and tests were done with pumps on

Surface 14" BWL Sand Bed 40" from lamp
Middle 730 356 153
Front 254 185 155
Back 180 155 125
Left 240 136 105
Right 263 170 115

Im pretty happy with the combination and the par readings I am getting. I will have to gradually lower the light every couple of months as the bulbs wear out. I am also going to order a reefbrite blue led strip to mount on the front of the light.

What?! I'll go check on the tank and post some pictures!
Corey

Lol....my neighbor just retired so he has been watching the tank and feeding. He's offered to send me pics but I told him not to. This trip has been nice because unlike previous vacations I really feel good about the condition of the tank and haven't spent too much time thinking about it.

Returned home from vacation yesterday to find my tank in great shape....glass needs to be cleaned but otherwise everyone is accounted for.

Now for some news that may bring this build to an end....My wife and I have decided that we are tired of the high cost of living in NJ and would like to move to SC where my sister lives. She's right outside of Charleston in a town called Mt. Pleasant. We are in the early stages of researching everything and I need to clear a few things with my job before we can take this to the next step. So for the next few weeks there won't be any new additions to tank since if this goes thru I will just have to sell off the live stock. If we do make the move I will sell the tank, stand and sump here in NJ and keep the rest of the equipment for the next tank down in SC. It would figure that this would come up just as I got the tank back on track but this just means I get to plan for another new tank and go bigger again :)
