My 280g Custom upgrade.....

I'm "working" from home today so I can try and catch this guy. The polyps are trying to reopen but he just keeps ripping them apart once they show any signs of life.

Steve - This is one of cases where a picture is worth a thousand words. Mostly profanity...but a thousand words none the less lol. That really sucks. The cool thing if they are what I think they they will grow back fast. Just saw he was at the buffet as soon as they open. Better catch him fast :-).

Not sure why I didn't think of this last night but for now I will remove that piece of rock and put it in my frag tank to give it some healing time and me time to get the rabbit fish out. Anyone want a free orange spot rabbit fish with a full belly?????

This might sound awful but is that rock small enough to put in the trap? If he keeps going after it maybe use it to bait him out, you'll just need to be there constantly so he doesn't shred the last of them once he's in the trap. Good luck!

I just might have to do that. I made a fish trap out of a plastic bottle but he didn't want anything to do with it. The rock is pretty big but if I have to break a small piece off with some of the zoa as a "sacrificial" piece I will do that....just going to need a bigger bottle.

Awesome Build Steve! Subscribed and can't wait to watch your tank progress. You really have taken the time to plan everything and it definitely shows. This may be a silly question but what exactly does an Algae Turf Scrubber do? How does it work? What is the benefits?

I saw the video that looks like there is a light in there.

Thank you!

Jon

Here's a great algae scrubber thread here on RC that covers the basics. Bud (FloydTurbo) is following along here and has been instrumental in the threads direction/success.

Quick and dirty....It pulls nitrates and phosphates out of the water with algae growth in a controlled environment with optimal lighting conditions. Removing the algae from the screen weekly takes out the unwanted nutrients from your system. In turn this allows for more fish feeding, less/no GFO usage, less water changes, and many other benefits.

Got the link to work by cutting and pasting.

Very interesting. What is the difference between this and having a refugium and and Chaeto in it? It appears you are incouraging algae to grow in a certain area but wouldn't you have a chance of having hair algae grow in the main tank?

That's the idea. You can find out more in the Advanced Topics section.

Steve have you gotten the Orange Spot Rabbit out yet?

nope....he's very smart and he's been behaving himself so for now he will stay. what ever zoas were left i pulled out and are in my frag tank.

Well glad you go to a resolution for now at least.

We will see how long it lasts...I noticed him nipping at my male japanese swallowtail angle last night. The angle is about 2" bigger than he is but thats not stopping him. He definitely needs to go!

Hey Steve,
I enjoyed reading your entire thread, you had me lmao at 2AM!! You've made excellent choice's for your build. I too was undecided about many things...and have made almost the same purchases such as yourself. From Portable AC to skimmer & rock aswell( well you know... lol). Pat yourself on the back bro, it's not easy and you did it with carefull planning and with a little help from the ab roller!! LOL... Ohh BTW, thanks again for your help. I know I'll be Happy with an Atlas Tank. TTY soon bruh!

Thanks man! It was a long road and some sleepless nights trying to decide on certain things. I can't wait to see your tank develop!

Algae Turf Scrubber update

Algae Turf Scrubber update

So I haven't really posted much about my scrubber since adding to my system because I was trying to different flow rates and photo periods. A little back round on the scrubber....its lit by 2 50w eshines grow leds and fed by an eheim 3000 pump. The leds are very powerful and thats what was causing me to play around with the photo periods. You will see in the pictures that there is very good growth around the outline of the light but where the light directly hits the screen there is none.

Right now the lights are on 9 hrs a day and for the next two weeks I will cut it back to 6 hrs a day to see if that improves the growth. The growth in the picture is after not cleaning the screen for two weeks. I am not unhappy with the growth....I would just like there to be more. As the bio load in my tank increases I want to make sure the screen is working at full capacity. Currently my no3 is zero and po4 ranges .0153 to .0244 using the ULR phosphorous checker by hanna. I am feeding 3-4 cubes a day at night, throw pellets in 2 times a day and 1 sheet of nori 3 times a week. I also add TLF phytoplankton, garlic extract and selcon to the frozen food 3 times a week.

I do throw a few chunks of it back into the tank for the tangs to feast on they seem to love it.
