My 280g Custom upgrade.....

Looking good buddy, but i would keep that green hynophora* away from other corals:))

Thanks Mike. Its hard to see but theres some space between the corals. I have another large hydno colony on the other side of the tank that I am going to trade for some frags and I am thinking about either trading this one too or trimming it back as it does take up a lot of space and is pretty aggressive. The other colony fell on a beautiful superman monti and half of the monti died. Fortunately I found it in time and was able to save the other half. The hydno was glued down but I guess I needed more glue!

Looks great, hows the zoa doing, is that in the frag tank or has it made its way back to the display?

Thanks Doug. The zoa is recovering but I don't think it will make it back to the dt any time soon. I will probably try to trade the entire piece of rock once it is fully recovered.

All the rocks looks nice and purple.
Steve, what type of salt are you using?

Thanks Lam. I am currently using Tropic Marin Reef Pro but I am kicking around possibly switching to IO to try and lower my monthly fish tank expenses.

If you go to IO let us know how it goes, I was using Kent in my current tank then started the slow switch to Brightwell, but I'm going with IO in the new tank and after I'm out of the Brightwell I have left will be converting the current tank through regular water changes.

I had heard that IO used to be low in calcium but that it was fixed but I don't know if I'll still need to does the make-up water with calcium before using it. When I make that switch I'll be doing some testing to figure that out as I want to come up with a good recipe and fix the make-up water rather than fix the tank...

I used IO when I started the tank up because I figured I would be going thru a lot of water and didn't want to spend a lot of money on salt that was just going to waste. I really haven't seen much of a difference since I have switched over to it. I do get a pretty good deal on the tropic marin from Dr. Foster and Smith. The 200g bucket is $70 (free shipping) and if you set up for monthly auto delivery....every 10th bucket is free so that knocks it down to $63 a bucket.

Salt

Steve,

That was what I thought when I see your rock that purple. (Tropic Marine Salt)
I had use IO and knowing that my rocks never ever get purple, and was fighting to find out why. finally I found out by switched to (Tropic Marine Salt) and the rock start to turn purple.

Tropic Marine Salt is alot more moeny than IO but it worth every penny at least to my own opinion.

Don't switch Steve or you will regret.

Sounds like your Mg or I was low but after years of a tank on IO and years on Kent I never saw a real difference and Randy Holmes-Farley is using IO so I'm going back. I did however regret my little divergance to Brightwell's salt I can't prove it but things were different after that switch.

Steve, your stuff is looking really, really nice. I agree with you on the Hydnophora. Mine wound up killing the Miami Orchid I had it near in my last tank. It was a crazy fast grower and very aggressive but I loved the green and full polyp extension it had.

I went with a Bali Green Slimer so that I can get the green without KO'ing all surrounding corals. Although, with all honesty, nothing is quite as vivid green as the Green Hydnophora.

Steve,
Do you get pro formula or regular? whats alk number on this salt?

mike

Mike, I use the pro formula. I haven't checked the alk on it in a while but from the tests that were run and posted on rc I think the alk is a little on the low side. I was told that this is a good salt mix if you are using a ca reactor. My alk in the tank has been steady at 9 dkh with the ca reactor running.

I moved that piece to the back of the tank to give me more room to add some frags. The green is really nice though!

Me and 3 other houses on my street are the only ones without power because a fuse on the pole blew. they're saying it won't be fixed until sometime tomorrow. ttrying to run a cord to my neighbor right next to me that has power.

Hope you got everything secured last night! I think you are the reason for the fuse blowing;)

Now you just need to build up a case to wife why you "need" whole house generator. It's for insurance of the house of course....Nothing to do with the tank!

Still no power. I ran a cord to my neighbors this morning around 6:30. tank sat for almost 12 hrs lost 1 fish that was in the frag tank for observation. I have pumps running now.

The ironic part about the generator is my wife wanted to get it and I said no.

Good luck then. Hopefully the power company gets power restored soon.
