Hope your power comes back on soon. If you've got a couple of those battery powered pumps run off d batteries, pop them in. Your corals will be fine with a short power outage but fish use up the 02 pretty quickly (a friend of mine lost 4 fish within 6 hours due to not dropping the pumps in when he went to bed and waiting until the morning).

I'd love to say I'll be prepared with a generator but these things are so unpredictable. Last weekend I worried when the wife and I was out of town for a few days. Right when we were leaving a very windy storm was blowing through and luckily it seemed we just lost power for a short while....I kept checking my Apex on phone and calling our answering machine to make sure things were ok! My luck is not so good today either Steve...Just came back up from basement where a float valve in my RO/DI reservoir decided to stop working:angryfire:

I hate float valves for that reason! I had my own overflow last night since I calculated wrong on the back flow amount and my sump isn't big enough.....fortunately I was standing close by and didn't get too much water on tge floor. I did have to siphon off about 10g before I had it under control.

Power came back on a few hrs ago and was off for a total of 15 hrs. For the most part everything seems ok except for my orange spot rabbit fish. He seems to be moving a little slow. I've been wanting to move him out of the tank for eating all of my zoas and now might be a good time to try and catch him but don't want to over stress him. So I will wait and see. I am mixing up some water now to do a wc later on tonight.
I tempted the power gods and lost. I did find some weak points in my system as a result that will be addressed this week and I will start my research on a standby generator.

I had a GFCI trip on a tank I maintain at an office a month ago, tripped around 7pm, power was off for 13 hours and lost 2 fish but no corals. Had a yellow tang that looked like he was near death but he recovered within a few hours after the power was restored and you wouldn't know that anything had happened by the end of the day.
Had a slight rise in N (to about 4 or 5) and no ammonia, then the scrubber grew a lot by the end of the week. Scrubber is the best thing to have in the system in the event of an outage. BTW I didn't do a PWC either and everything was fine and still is.
I've had guys in my club have 4 day outages and not lost a thing so it can be the worst thing or it can be the least worrisome thing also. Time will only tell so good luck but I think whatever you lose during the outage might be the extent of it.

Hey Steve.
I am glad that the power is back on and that you pretty much escaped any major damage. It is a helpless feeling. I just went through it a few weeks ago, only 7,500 miles away.
I am also going to have to look into some sort of generator. I did order two backup batteries my MP60's which are supposed to give me approximately 20 hours of additional flow/water circulation. Before I left, I placed an order for two MP40's. Your power failure serves as a reminder, I should order two battery backups for those two. I believe on the MP40's the battery backups extend their lives for 36 hours.

Ill tell you....this just isn't my day. some how I turned the return pump off from my phone and didn't realize it. I just went down to get some water for the kids Beta tanks and noticed water coming out from under the fish room door :banghead:

I would be honored to join you with that drink. My power went out last night and noticed it was out for about 5 hours. Glad everything worked out.

Hey Steve...hope you found and managed to find the leak in time to avoid any real damage to your electronics and/or furniture. At first I was resistant to using a check valve but had a buddy talk me into it when I redesigned my return plumbing. The George Fisher Wye Check Valve's are crazy expensive but saved my backside two months ago when we lost power for 12 hours. Now, I lose 5 gallons at most when my return pump is turned off.
While we are spending your money this may be an opportunity to upgrade your controller to a GHL with the leak sensor.
On the serious tip, I hope everything is well given your trials over the past couple of days. If there is anything I could do to help...just ask my friend.

As for the sohal....he was put into general population when I received an order from Live Aquaria of new fish. I needed to isolate the fish so he was promoted from the 80g frag to the DT. He is definitely living up to his reputation but only with fish his size or bigger with exception to my male Bimac Anthias. The sohal made a charge at the bimac and stopped just as he got close. He hasnt gone near him since. What's even funnier is the only fish he is afraid is my half dollar sized yellow tang. When the yellow tang gets near the sohal, the sohal bails and runs for cover.
I will say that I was very happy for Monday morning to come around as this was a very stressful weekend. I was pretty close to throwing in the towel at one point but my 4 yr old son put his arm around me and told me that everything will be ok.

Steve, I think/hope you are past the worst of it, when I had a power outage most of the damage was done because of low O2 so if you got that back up then you are probably good, BUT pay attention to ammonia and nitrite as though you are cycling again just in-case the biological filter was damaged heavily. For me I lost a number of fish but no corals and it was all to do with the low O2, I was traveling at the time and couldn't do much about it.

I am just catching up from vacation and my AC dieing. Sorry to hear you lost power man. How is everything else holding up? Any more fish loses? What did you loose? The corals will be fine hopefully. When we had that blizzard a few years back my power was out for about 8 hours and I lost a couple hundred dollars worth of fish. I ended up running to my car in 3 feet of snow and running an extension cord to a power converter. My wife was like what about us...I told her not now honey I have to save the fish...LOL. Good thing you had a nice neighbor. You all will be friends until he gets his electric bill...just kidding. Also like milonedp said watch for a mini cycle.

Everyone is hanging in there and look pretty good. I did water tests last night and no signs of a mini cycle yet. I totally forgot about the scrubber being dry so the screen will have some sets backs to the growth. I was pretty bummed last night because the tank just doesnt look as good as it should but I will get it back to where it was. Check valves should arrive tomorrow so I will get those hooked up.
I have seemed to develop a lot of micro bubbles entering the tank from the return lines so I will try to figure out where they are coming from. My initial thought is that they are coming from the return pump being too strong for the tank. I have the bv on the main outlet turned back and then I have the bv's on each return line to the tank turned back. Fun Fun Fun Fun.

Don't get too down about this minor set back. You will get back there soon enough. Check you skimmer for the micro bubbles. Did you move anything in your sump recently? Moved a piece of rock the other day and now I am having a similar issue.

So I had been dealing with an ich outbreak for about a week before I lost power last weekend. I was trying to feed my way thru the ich cycle as I had done in the past with success but the power failure really thru it into overdrive and within the last few days a few of my fish have lost the battle.

Pair of Japanese Swallow Tail Angles...this one stings the most not just from a cost stand point but they quickly became my favorites in the tank.
The corals are looking better and better every day and only had a minor loss on a small portion of my digitata where I noticed rtn/stn at the base. I quickly cut it and mounted on a new frag.
Micro bubbles are still driving me nuts and I am being told that I have too many elbows between my sump and return pump. So I will be looking to change how that is set up.
Needless to say its been a very trying week but I am hanging in there. The remaining fish in the tank are looking better every day and are still eating like pigs.
