My 280g Custom upgrade.....

thanks Dustin! I put my post in there and will report back what they say. They look harmless but thats what I said about the next door neighbors kid before he hopped over my fence stole all of the pumpkins we were growing last year.

Pumpkins...go figure.

Pumpkins...go figure.

Yup and we found them a day later smashed in the street in front of our house. Now you've been to my house so you know how close my neighbors are....needless to say we dont have a very good relationship with them now.

Imagine what a little bit of skimmate in a bag could do to the inside of a car, crawl space or open window.

I'm just sayin'...

OMG that would be so foul! Imagine the stank of that stuff sitting inside a car in the summer heat...................

You guys are so wrong. Geniuses but wrong. I know a neighbor right now I wouldnt mind doing that too for the simple fact she narked on me for painting my house.

Back on topic. Congrats on the discovery and recovery.

Well it took a while but we finally got the lighting schedule dialed in and now I have a full screen. amazing how strong these leds are.

Here's my lighting schedule....
Right side 1hr off/1hr on/2hr off
Left side 2hr off/1hr on/1hr off

This is growth after 5 days since last cleaning

Looking good. Do u completely clean the scream or leave some algae to have it established already?

You never really want to "clean" the screen, at least in the true definition of the word. What you do is scrape the algae off the screen, leaving whatever has grown in the holes alone, and then just rinsing the screen under room temp tap water at moderate flow (not blasting, and not using a sprayer)

When a screen has been growing for 4-6 weeks, it usually has algae filling in the vast majority of the holes on the screen substrate. So this is left behind to 'seed' the next week's growth.

Occasionally I will give the screen a little more thorough cleaning.

So floyd you are saying that bleach would never be a good thing to use on the screen?? :celeb1:

Seriously though, I just use a plastic scrapper to remove the growth on both sides, give a rinse and back on the scrubber it goes. If I am not taking pictures of the screen, the cleaning from start to finish is 10-15 mins tops.

With the improved growth on the screen, I am noticing much less algae growth on the glass in the DT.

If only they had a quiet version, I've heard some and it's def not an under the tank option lol... If only I had a fish room

Both of mine have been very quiet. Most of the diy scrubbers are in the stand and relatively quiet if done right. Talk to Bud (floydrturbo) for suggestions on noise reduction.

Yeah I did some tinkering and figured out that if you make a closed box for the scrubber with a bottom drain then make a secondary drain, then put a valve on the bottom drain, you can tune the outflow just right and it goes dead silent.

BACTERIAL INFECTION

So for the last week I have been having epic failure with corals and every day I am pulling out frags and colonies of sps. I started seeing signs of stress last weekend in the tank and did a full round of water tests. Everything was at normal levels and within acceptable ranges so I just continued to keep an eye on things. Well it didnt take long for pieces to show signs of stn/rtn and tried fragging pieces but within 24-48 of showing signs of tissue loss....the entire frag/colony was gone. I started running chemi pure to pull out any toxins in case something got in the water but that hasnt helped. I did do a two week course of kick ich which I have used in the past with a lot of success in healing the fish and having no ill effects on my corals. The final dose went a couple of days before any I started seeing stress in my corals. At first it was only effecting my sps but now my lps are on the decline. Acans have melted, frog spawn and hammers are receding, mushrooms are closed and leather has died. The odd thing is that there are still corals in there that look perfectly healthy with no signs of stress....good pe and color. I really dont think the kick ich had anything to do with and I am leaning towards a bacterial infection. I found information on Vibrio bacterial infections in corals and it sounds a lot like what I am going thru right now. Its been a long summer for me and the tank. I've lost a lot of fish after the power outage and ich and now I have lost almost 60% of the coral I had in the tank and I continue to pull dead pieces out every day. From what I have read there is no way to treat a bacterial infection with sps and you just have to let it run its course. I just dont know how much more of this I can handle. I will be running a UV that I picked up for 12 hrs a day to start so if there are any pathogens in the water column it will help take care of it. My luck has to change soon because I am close to pulling the plug on this project and starting a new thread in the equipment for sale forum. :headwalls:

Steve, stick in there. I did not disclose in my thread that I lost a round of fish due to an unknown reason but we all have our times. Stick in there and keep your head up!

Thanks Dustin. Its definitely no fun posting about the negative things that happen in this hobby. My 7 yr old asked me what was wrong with the tank and I told her that it was sick and that I was trying my best to make it better again. She told me I wasn't doing a good job and that I needed to try harder....it did make me laugh a little a first....lol.

Stick with it Steve.

It's always darkest just before the dawn. Remember this day. It's the beginning of a success story soon to come!
