My 480g plywood tank is nearing completion lots of pics.

Ya I did that you can still see the old giant stag in the middle towards the back. I got anew frag of that same coral and mounted it near where the old one was at. The other big colony I lost was a tricolor that now has teh red planet and somepink birdsnest on it. Annoyingly even after it RTNed pieces survived and there are tiny tricolor colonies all over that part of the tank that grew back. Same thing happened with portions of the green hyacinth though I was able to save most of that colony. Nothing like free live rock

I also plan on removing most of teh rest of teh IDaho Grape Monti I just can't keep it colored consistently and its so fragile that there are little colonies all over the rear portion of the reef that I can't really get photographs of. I have some sunburst monti I plan on putting in its place in a few months once it grows ouot in the frag tank some.

Good man!
I'm gonna have to go back through this build again. I'm planning another large reef (180+ gallons) and I'm contemplating a 6' x 3' x 2' but I'm not certain that I will have the room to move something that big into the house. I have a lot of turns and narrow doorways. Even my 210 was challenging to get into the house. Plywood may be a good option for me. Thanks for keeping us updated!

I did OK with mine.... I think. I had an Idaho Grape at one point and just a purple cap. I also would add that nitrates are not the end of the world as some would have us believe. I think a little dirt is good for the corals. Some of mine became quite hairy as a result of suspended detritus but flow is the key to that problem. High flow also promotes dense sleletons IMHO.

I think this is it here.

A better shot.

The parent colonies of my caps usually had rather sparce polyp densities and vertical striations with very thin pedals. In this tank I could often not even see the flesh because of the dense polyp concentration and they were a beast to frag. Just keep your flow high and I think the dirt will continue to work in your favor. :lmao:

It was till April when I tore it down to move. Currently in storage till the new house is built when it will get a new coat of epoxy and a 1400 gallonish brother. I plan on replacing the bracing on the top with angle iron and several coats of epoxy paint to eliminate the crossbar as well.

Was there some reason you only went with a 30" tall tank? I have been looking but can't find any info on plywood size and reinforcement needed for a taller tank. What if I wanted to go to 36" tall or use the whole sheet at 48" tall?

waoo 1400, thats a lot of water.. lol the angle iron on top is a good idea, more light in the tank.. will be fallowing that big brother

Hmm guess this guy was wrong, been forever since I've been at this thread, I will get some new pictures up tonight in its new home.

The top of your tank will probably fail!!!!!You shold have at least two wide center braces on the tank top!!

Bout friggen time!

Looking forward to seeing updates! This tank was one of my inspirations. We need more wood on this forum.....er, um, plywood that is. :D

absolutely awesome tread. whats the plan now that its setup? the hobby has changed and evloved so much since you first built it. any plans to run led's?

Nope no plans to upgrade much of anything really other than adding some more circulation. Probably will look at a Gyre in the near future. As far as LEDs I still haven't seen anything I am extremly impressed with and I have a Radion Pro 2 on a frag tank. If I remember to bring home some screws this afternoon, I will actually be adding some VHO super Actinics to the setup.

I hear ya! Tried and true isn't anything to mess with. VHo is going to turn it super blue. I would wait on the gyre just a tad longer. News is they will revamp it in the very near future for easier overall use.
