My 500G Osama Reef-2

Hi Cordero.. Thanks and we are pleased with the tank so far. Few things for Matt to tweak on performance especially a bubble issue...Next year we start the finishing of the stand and the framing around the lights etc and loading it with the corals & fish. The fun part starts then.
I dose ESV: Mag/Calc & ALK. and for the first year I also use Calc reactor and Kalkwasser reactor.. After everything is stable and parameters are good I stop the dosing and rely on cal and Kalk reactors with occasional additional dosing IF REQUIRED. I also keep stronium and Iodine on hand just for occasional addition

Hi Rogue.. Lots of work including glass cleaning... Important thing is to enjoy it after the work is done.. I & wife love the reef tank.. have some bugs to fix and finish the enclosure...

A fellow friend/hobbyist came over with some large frags and took these pictures of the tank that is almost one month since we started filling it. Hope you like them. I do not know how to set my camera to take pictures with this nice color/hew

Corals accumulated so far in right side of tank

I see everyone places their lights front to back compared to side to side is there a reason for this I will be getting ready to do my 75g build and I'm purchasing two reef breeders value led lights cause I prefer the look of to hanging lights compared to one single ligh stretched all the way across the tank I will be getting the with th 90 optics is it okay to place the side to side or is there more benefits to mounting them front to back like you have yours. Any help would be greatly appreciated btw very nice build you on my dream tank hhaha

Thanks Keith for your comment. Regarding the lights. I had the same light (one) on my 65 g tank (36"X18") placed along the long axis of the tank. AND I felt that I needed the light fixture over more to the from of the tank rather than the center as the back was not for viewing... It did a great job for an 18" wide(F to B) tank. Notice the sides of the tank are not as bright as the rest of the tank.
Here is how one light loooked in my 65g

For my 500g the width is 30 inches and tank is viewed from both sides so needed to have the light reach the front & back as much as possible and then I can place as many fuixtures along the long axis of the tank as I deem desirable. Five fixtures over 10.8 feet seems to be doing a good job:
Here is a picture that shown the light intensity across the whole tank, a bit better than the pictures above..FYI

Hope this was helpful and good luck

Yeah thanks for the help I guess I'll try to mount them over the tank both ways during the cycle and see what happens and what results are best I'll choose thanks for the help. Try and do a update video of your tank I'd love to see the progress

beautiful set up. I like the fact that you can see through it. It is going to be a lot of glass to clean. Worth it in the end though. Nice work

Yes Clay lots of fun doing the work .. more fun today & yesterday buying & adding to the corals & fish .. Changing water & seeing everything enjoying a good swim

Hitchhicker star

Hitchhicker star

Is this star fish OK or ditch it? Pls let me know what U think. Was on coral that I just bought

There's thousands of different types of sea stars. Many of them show up in your tank and never get any bigger than that. It is probably safe, but if it grows bigger you will have to watch it for a while to see what it is eating. Most of them are just detritivores.

Thanks Dave.. Before I put him back in a 500g I need to be sure .. meanwhile he is in a bit of water sharing my desk for now!!

Looks like asterina star...IMO get rid of it, will multiply like crazy, and is often the 'prime suspect' in the disappearance of Zoas!

I agree, get rid of it, it will multiply and it looks like the kind that eat coraline algae of the rocks and glass. I have about a million and once I tried to get rid of them by pulling them out one by one, well that didn't work. You will probably still have them in the tank so getting rid of that one shouldn't be a problem. There is also a shrimp that eats starfish, I don't remember the name off hand but it will clean those up if they get out of hand. I thought of doing that once but was told that when the stars are gone it will starve unless you buy stars. Again I didn't do that either. Again, great build, enjoy
