My 500G Osama Reef-2

I'm rather over the top when it comes to QT I'm afraid. I keep one 30L running permanently as a QT for inverts and observation for fish that either have been medicated, or have come from a fellow reefers tank (thus assumed to be disease free). I then have two more 30L tanks that I press into service as needed as hospital tanks. Basically I keep a canister on my main display filled with those ceramic bio rings that I can use in a HOB filter on either or both of the hospital tanks. Generally when I need one, I run 20 gallons from my display, then dilute it down to 1.020 with RODI water. Once the new fish is home it generally just requires a bit more fiddling to match the salinity. Only exception I have found is Divers Den who ship fish at full salinity of 1.025. Hope that helps!

My process for most fish is to put them into one of my hospital tanks with Nitrofuracin green powder for the first 10 days. Then I do either chloroquine phosphate or cupramine for 4 weeks followed by two rounds of prazipro taking another two weeks or so. Then I observe for another couple of weeks. So all told, 10-12 weeks.

Only exception is wrasses. I have had problems getting them through my QT process without dying. So I put them into my intro tank and just observe then maybe prazipro.

Ca1 thanks. I have to admit I have been negligent relying on the word of a trusted LFS/installer of my system .. who said it is OK to put directly in my DT. He is working on my system weekly and knows how well my fish and corals were doing... maybe something was wrong with my system but I only had four fish that wee inthe 65 g healthy for over 4 months... That's history.. Reef and learn!!
Do you keep the canister with ceramic bio balls on all the time with the DT : advantage ?as I may want to consider it as well...

Yes, I just run a pair of TLF 550 phosban reactors off my manifold pump containing whatever bio media I happen to have laying around. Right now I am actually using Denitrate (not sure of it helps with nitrate, but it serves nicely as seeded bio media) in the reactors. I just keep them full, running all the time, so I have a supply of ready seeded media for whenever I need it. I figure the amount of media in a full 550 reactor is enough to setup as many as 4 QT tanks. When one is empty, I refill it and just use the other one. You cannot reuse the media once it has been on a QT tank though.

Worst case scenario, the two reactors serve as a bunch of extra live rock

Thanks I have two 55O Phosban One has for a month now some-kind of phosphate removal media. I guess I can use it, if need be, in a QT next time. I can also put somekind of media in the second GFO... Thanks I gor the idea.. Not so complex of a procedure Just have to do it ..

Two Dead Fish on 12/31

Two Dead Fish on 12/31

Here is a picture of two of the four dead fish. I bought those two and a presumed dead Blenny on 12/27 and on 12/30-31 all died. A fourth angel fish is hiding not eating and is still alive. Bought from same place at same time. I asked and was told that salinity was at 1.09 and that I needed to accilmate by doubling the volume of water and repeating ... I did that for over two hours. Everything looked fine especially the yellow tang eating and grazing the others not so.. for a day or two then all went south. My fish that I had a long time and other fish I had just bought and put in the tank all were covered with, I assume ich. I have since put the UV on full time, I changed the water twice and stopped dosing garlic into the tank and started feeding more than once a day, more like twice or three times. Fish that did not die are recovering and the new angel is still alive but not coming out and not eating.. A cleaner wrasse I bought is having the best meal of his life cleaning the big guys Sohal, Blue, Naso, copras, copperband, wrasse,

I assume those two died from ich or from whatever they carried from the Oceans or the store!! or was in my new tank

I am finally less emotional and coping and doing what I can to see the rest survive.. I have now twelve fish in the tank that I plan on nursing in the MDT

Why did you stop dosing garlic? Evidence is empirical but garlic is used to strengthen the fish's immunity to ich. Also, cleaners cannot do anything for ich. The parasite is under the skin out of reach of the cleaners.

How sure are we that dosing garlic is OK Dave... I was dropping 50 drops into a 500g daily and was starting to get some new brown bloom that I attributed to the garlic... despite my huge skimmer and UV bloom was startng to cover my sand & rock surfaces...

No, there is no scientific basis for the efficacy of garlic, just reefers' experience using it.

Dose the food, not the water.

e.g. if you are feeding frozen foods, rinse the food to remove high-phosphate juices (a bit of old nylon stocking works well for this) then place food in small container and drip garlic essence into food. It's hard to say how much. It depends on how much you're feeding - say 5-10 drops. Allow to soak in for a few minutes then feed fish.

You can also use garlic essence on nori. Rinse nori then drip garlic liberally over surface -10-20 drops. Allow to soak in for a bit then feed to fish.

the brown algae is your tank cycling from adding 9 fish in 3 days.
i take my time adding new fish, a few every couple weeks to several months.
dosing the tank with garlic is better than just food, for the fish that are not eating yet.
IMO fish don't die from ich that fast, its was osmotic shock.
always test water after acclimation to make sure the levels match your display.

You sound exactly like my Fish supplier and system installer// a Trusted supplier and friend !! Thanks mm949.. I got to take a look at your thread to see that 1350gallon tank.. I am now jealous with my HUGE MEAGER 500gallons!! Thanks
No harm to animal from dosing 50 drops into the tank daily... For How long???

then garlic helps the fish beef up their slime coat making them more resistant to free floating parasites.
i dose daily till i see no more cysts, sometimes for months.

big tanks are nice when everything is going smoothly, nightmare when not.
take your time stocking the tank.

Must be My Unlucky week DC10500 died on me

Must be My Unlucky week DC10500 died on me

I am just trying to recover from fish losses and Ich . Now while sitting watching the tank one of my four DC10500 pumps stopped working. No power whatsoever. unplugged it from APEX connected to its own extension chord .. No juice.. Is this thing dead after two months.... AND I own four of them.. I have a panic message & email to my installer I hope he picks-up in such an emergency... We shall see....what he says and what to do... I am draining the tank so if another pump goes down I do not get a flood..

Yes Steve of of the two main tank pumps is down...All my four tanks are connected. Two pumps feed the main tank.. One is down.. so water level in sump rises to an uncomfortable level. If the second main tank pump goes down then water will go into an overflow and avoid the flood or still cause some flooding. By lowering the level in the sump everything continues to work. skimmer has own third pump and fourth pump supplies the frag & refugium tanks... If more than one more pump goes down overnight (not likely) then I am not sure what will happen as all four tanks drain into same sump

Unfortunately the DC pumps are not reliable at all. I have had 3 die on me in the past year just like yours did. They are really nice, quiet and energy efficient but they don't last long. I opened them all up and they are all 100 % the same. I owned one by waveline, speed wave and now jebao. They all have the same exact impeller and engine block. They just come in different colors from different companies. The Jebao's controller looks different too but you can plug it into the other controllers if you want to. One of the manufacturers even basically told me that they are all made on the same assembly line in China.

Why would a pump failure drain your tank though? Wouldn't it just be like you shut the pump down?

There are many routes to success in this hobby, though an infinitely greater number to failure; but frankly I would not be adding garlic to my system! There is absolutely no evidence that it does anything beneficial to fish, and seems to me more likely to be detrimental. Anyone considering garlic ought to read Humaguy's synopsis on the matter.

Adam: I have a waveline 10000 will the power supply work on the DC10500?/ if that is tehe problem.
ca1ore: garlic no garlic : view differ and we listen and decide for ourselves. I appreciate the reference as I need to read more on the subject... after I fix my pump situation and thanks to all..
