How long do I observe new fish in QT

How long do I observe new fish in QT

I bought three clown fish and have them in QT tank without meds for one week. They are eating fine and do not show any disease on the skin. Two questions
1 Should I always medicate new fish or just observe
2. How long before moving into the DT and be safe not to contaminate the DT

The word "quarantine" is based on the Italian word for 40. That's a good number of days to aim for. As to whether to pretreat, you will get as many different answers as there are aquarists. Personally, I am for pretreatment.

are they wild-caught clowns or tank-bred and raised?

as dave mentioned, there are a number of opinions on prophylactic treatment and of quarantine protocols in general.

i too am for prophylactic treatment but only after a period of de-stress and the fish are eating very well and have adjusted (assuming they are asymptomatic like you mention) and quarantine of at least 4 weeks.

if wild-caught, i can't see many arguing against at the very least treating for brooklynella.

So I can't just take each fish and give it a good scrub in the bathtub and place him in the DT. Patience is NOT one of my strong points but am trying!!!! Forty days sounds like forever to someone like myself... Thanks guys Appreciate the input..
I think the fish from my LFS are more likely to be wild caught than tank raised but am not sure.

A side note on non reef item A bird nest on our patio

A side note on non reef item A bird nest on our patio

We havea Robin nest in a small hibiscus plant on our deck

Here is the latest as of this morning .the mother left the nest and my wife noticed that the eggs hatched .at least two of the three did. And the mother came back and sat on the third egg and baby birds. How they do not suffocate is beyond me. Enjoyable scene to us at least hope U like it as well

Well now I am all caught up read all 22 pages. Happy to see that this is coming along for you and the wife.

Hope you find whats causing the last part of the bubbles as for I know that can be a real pain.

I am now subscribed so I can keep up with your progress. I am just now starting my new tank 180 in wall with small fish room behind it. One day I would love to have a tank this large.

Thanks Reel.. My first and so far most successful was my 180g. Here it is after about six years. Glad you are joining in and good luck with your 180g

MP60s not staying in Place

MP60s not staying in Place

I have four MP60s in my 500g. Matt installed my system and did a beautiful job. My MP60s loosen up and they fall off and the motor is behind the beautiful fixed framing enclosure and I am unable to get to it. Matt will be coming to retrieve it for us. My question : How to best anchor the motor in place so it does not keep falling off. I need to be able to vary the flow etc and not worry about loosing the motor and have difficulty retrieving it. Motor is behind the fixed vertical boards at each end
As I said beautiful setup but placement of our MP 60's are less than optimal!!
Any ideas to anchor solidly and still be able to remove if maintenance is needed will be essential
Keep in mind very tough to get access to the motor and I am 70 yrs with on-going treatment for back problems

WE LOVE OUR TANK AND THE WORK DONE BY SHO-TANK (all work is done by Matt himself). Only challenge are the MPs and bubbles that are being tackled by Matt.. Not sure also if I'll keep the huge skimmer as it needs adjusting daily almost
Thanks for your thoughts on the anchoring of the Mp's!!

Hi Steve . MP60s mounted on side (end) of tank glass is 3/4 Thick and correct size spacer has been placed on motor signed. That's been confirmed. Matt is a no show for few weeks now and am not sure when he will be able to make it
Was able to retrieve the motor using magnet (Tank cleaner magnet worked). cleaned the wet side with water & vinegar. But the motor is suspended, without proper stabilizers of some kind, it keeps coming off. For now I have the motor tied to keep from loosing again below. Wire is holding the MP motor. Need to place it like 15 inches below surface.

Have 5 inches betwee the glass and wall .. Wire is holding the MP motor

Vertical end tank frame blocks access to the 5 inch space

I would contact ecotech and see what they can suggest.

I did Steve. They are sending a whole bunch of those stickies that come with the MPs. They suggested I clean the surface and remount the motor. So I really will need Matt to come over and do this and then see if Ecotech recommendation is all that is needed to hold the motor in place. Ecotech also suggested I double up on the zip-lock ties and place two hook anchors and put as many stickies around the motor as possible to restrain it,,,, Parts should arrive Monday Ecotech said ...and if Matt can come then will be great ... I will contact him

I had this same problem so I mounted a pvc pipe on my light frame above my mp60 and simply wrapped the power cord around it several times and secured it with a zip tie. This has worked well for me for several years.
