My 540G Inwall Display Build Thread

If your shed meets all of the city's zoning ordinances (i.e. setbacks, bldg. hgt. & s.f.) he cannot legally sue you. The zoning ordinance and building code cannot be enforced by a resident.
Unfortunately this happened to a co-worker and she spent $60K and 18 months fighting it until it was finally thrown out of court.

Good luck.

P.S. You may want to offer to reduce the height to be equal with the height of the wall. That way he won't be able to see it.

I offered to lower it a foot(thats as far as I can and still fit everything) and raise the wall up at my cost. He was not interested in that. He is just a grumpy guy that seems to be mad at the world. I have no doubt it will be throw out. Its just a matter of how long it will take and how much it will cost me, like you said.

I'm not a lawyer, actually an architect but if he sues you should counter sue him for bringing a nusiance suit or SLAPP suit. Here in NJ you can counter sue to recuope your legal fees if it's deemed a nusiance suit.

Hey Ryan, tank is really nice, love your project. Im actually thinking of how i can accomplish what u have, make a tank in my bedroom but at the same time Visible to another room.

As for for having a shed i think its a cool idea I'm thinking of myself, no noise and more room outside. Does the pump have to be bigger to pump longer distances???

You are like me, i always take the highroad. But there is a line where if i cross it. i'll take it as a chess game and find little things to annoy him with while having a good laugh.

As others suggested warn him about his shed, but i would actually ask him whats wrong with his brain, does he have any mental problems. i bet u can have a good laugh playing mind games with a guy like that, i know i would.

Goodluck hope everything works well for you.

.................hmmm if he wont like the look of the shed from his backyard, is there anything else u can hang up in your own yard to annoy him, like some weird boards that advertise stuff like, politicians and bikini models. :jester:

Don't listen to this guy, it will end up getting you in more trouble. I have no respect for people who coward around "playing chess games" (my old roomate). Be a man, if you feel you are right stand up for what you believe with solid, logical arguments. If that doesn't work just leave it be, don't lower yourself to their level.

From all the work that i have seen on reef central this is the must perfect and incredibel setup and tank I have ever seen..I give you not 10 Stars I give it every singel star for the work you have done and the support and pasion you have...

I know a lot of people don't like to share numbers when building a tank but I think its an important part to share as people read these threads to help plan their own build. Obviously the cost involved is one of the most important things you need to plan for. With that said here is a breakdown so far on costs.

Tank $3250
Bulkheads $275
Stand and canopy $1300
Paint for stand $100
Wood for framing and labor $300
Multiple dates with wife to keep her happy during construction...Priceless.

Bid for (4) 13" solar tubes $3000 installed

I'm only up to this page in my quote, but had to comment because I am blown away just by the beautiful tank. I have been drooling so much my Laptop is probably going to fry soon. Love the dimensions. Thanks for posting prices, your right, it really does help us who would like to tackle an endeavor like this soon. Its always nice to know approximate costs, so you run less of a risk of running into money crunches, or to realize theres no way I could ever afford this! Anyway, thats a small price to pay for a hobby and a dream. Love it!

I like everything about this thread except for that darn CAL logo as your avatar!

Just a bit of fun... :bounce3:

Seriously. I think this setup is AWESOME! Just great. Really good job.

Did you end up buying the solar tubes? I've been considering them for my next upgrade... The only thing is that I'm not home during the day that much so I wouldn't get to see them working that often.

I didnt intend for him to get into more trouble just giving him something to laugh about. If i was in that situation i could never confront someone in a negative way im a nice and peacful guy by nature so being mean and confronting is something i cant do. but as i mentioned there is a line where i get annoyed and will play around with the situation.

I hope everything works out for u Ryan. still a awesome set up 10/10!!!

All of my filtration stuff is in a shed, but I took the wimpy way out and bought a Tuff Shed. In my city, I only get it permit free if it is less than 100sf, not 200. I'm jealous. Cool neighbors though, so fortunately I don't have that hassle to worry about. After all the issues are resolved, you will love having the equipment outside. It keeps the tank area much more quiet.

Great build, everything looks very, very nice. I wanted to do the same thing, but my wife asked what happens when we move and try to sell the house? UUUhhhhhh!!!!

How did you sell the idea to your wife?

Nice tank and look forward to more progress!!!

My wife lets me do just about whatever I want. She is very laid back. I try to return the favor. I just told her when its time to sell the house that its a lot easier to take the tank out and fix the drywall that it will be to put the tank in. We plan to be in this house 15 years or so, so we have time.

Reading back through the thread I noticed I did not post and final pictures of the shed. It still needs a door handle and paint on the over hang area but it 98% done on the outside. I wish I could get a picture of the back of the shed which I lined with oleander trees to screen the shed from the neighbors but I doubt he will let me in his yard to take a picture. I plan on using the pavers in front of the shed to make a path to the front door of the shed.
