My 540G Inwall Display Build Thread

Ive wanted to do something similar with a surge tank. Have you given any thought to doing something like this?

Quick sketch.....

That is a pretty coll idea but I would think I would have issues with my overflow and the surge in regards to noise. As you can see my bed is right there, I need it to be quiet. The space is available up there though.

Ya I would imagine it would have some noise.
I wanted to also put an air line in so it looked like the waves crashing.

Progress has been a bit slow as I was moving the stand by myself and dropped it on my toe and broke it. Note to self excersize patience. I also ran into a problem with the width of the opening for the stand and canopy. I was able to make the stand fit but the canopy will have to be redone and hung from the ceiling instead of sitting on the stand like designed. I was able to get the floor sealed with Drylock, the AC vent pulled out and the stand in place. Hopefully this week the new ac duct will get installed and the bulkheads will be drilled and installed with the tank on the stand. Here are a few pictures of the progress.

Hi Ryan,

Did you weld up the stand yourself?

Wondering how difficult it would be for me to do it on my next tank?

I do like a challenge and if and when its successful its that more rewarding.

Enjoying your build,
Bob

I did not trust my welding skills on the level of this project, so I had a friends Dad do it. He runs an auto repair shop in town and did a great job. With a bit more practice I think it could be something I could do in the future.

I have a picture of the toe but decided not to post it as I assume most people browsing this thread would not care to see it. :)

Got the tank drilled for the closed loops and the over flow this weekend. The overflow was drilled 3 times for 2" bulkheads. Each closed loop has 2 supplies via 1.5" bulkheads in the center of the tank and 4 returns via 3/4" bulkheads. I hope to get the tank on the stand tomorrow if I can round up enough people to lift it.

Ryan-your tank is real nice, as a thought, you might want to have the top openings routed out bigger for access and light penetration before you add water-they look small for the size of your tank-just my opinion

The openings are 18"x17" and are big enough for me to get through them, I doubt I will put anything bigger than myself in there :) But you never know.... I plan to have a solar tube over each opening so I dont think I will have a light penetration problem. I guess we will see. Nice avatar BTW!

Eventually Saltspray and evap will accumulate on the underside of your euro-bracing. do you think it will be a summaberitch to clean? Or do you have something slick?

A case of beer, 2 XL pizza's, and 7 guys later...
