My 65 Gallon Mixed Reef

Most stuff is looking a bit happier than a few weeks back so i'm sure everything will be back on track over the next month or two.

Good to know that things are going well for your tank mate. You are a very skilled coral doctor. In all seriousness mate, it shows just how well you are at keeping SPS corals.

Since you and Bello are joint 2nd place sneaky gits after me (seems like Bello's awarded me the 1st place) I expect there will be another tank from your very soon?

 THE REEF DOCTOR IS IN!!! :celeb3:

He's definitely been helping me sort out all my choices and diagnose my decisions! Very helpful and much appreciated

I look forward Wednesday, Biggles. Some acro encrusting pictures will make for a good BRR over lunch! ("biggles ramble reading"). It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the encrusting side of acros and how to plan for and what to try to expect when placing frags and such. I bet there's some good pearls of wisdom somewhere in there you could pass on to a young reefer with an empty tank. Because I will need some thought put into this soon, I hope.

Troub: It takes years of training to fully learn the ways of the sneaky reefer. Biggles and Bello trained me well...now I am better than them...:lol2:

PM Bello...he is the more cunning...Biggles is better with the ancient words of wisdom and crackpot science of SPS Sneaky Reefing.

I don't doubt you're better then them now. I don't think I've ever seen your newest set up... hahaha ;-) Despite looking for your thread and seeing lots of other posts around. Is there a FTS yet? :deadhorse1::bounce3: hehehe

I'll just have to practice up and see if I can slip one in past you all ;-) :fun2: I'll work on a hidden Easter Egg in the tank soon I think. Go

Hahahahahahahahahah:lol: maybe one day I'll be a sneaky reefer ;-)

Haven't you heard of double standards biggles? . Sahin's the master of sneakiness BTW, his tank is still a mystery

I wish I knew something about MH/T5's to actually have some input here :p. Still stuck in the 70's with the disco lights I'm afraid. I think a 6 tube T5 might be cool, but are you running the 250w alongwith them? I'd think a 6 tube t5 only experiment might be more interesting.

That's a pretty impressive pic with the phone under t5/led. Things seem to be coming along nicely, and admittedly I'm getting more comfortable running the tank with berlin plus chaeto as well.

I'd really like to see you get a DSLR though. Would love to see you work your magic with that. Aren't there any used photo equipment sites around?

I thought that Ric was done for lol, glad to see it's split

Hi mate, i meant just having 6 x 24W T5's over the sump - no halide. Atm i still have the cruddy blue white LED unit illuminating the 20x20x10" potential rainbow vomit colors nano SPS display.
Yeah it'd be cool to own a decent camera, i could take some better closeups and shoot in RAW which would make things a lot easier.
I'm going to nuke those bloody rics with boiling RO once i figure out how to get to them safely with my death wand, they're already stinging my acro's and that aint gonna fly...........

Here's a brown out i'm still waiting to see do something nice color wise. He's stung the you know what out of the pink stylo so not a total loss ( i like nasty acros )
The thing on the left above the brown acro is slowly coloring up nicely, i think i forgot to mention that one too Bello........... my reef memory is just terrible now days mate......

Yip will do. still a couple of weeks from getting him as I'm still saving up for some fish for my 60gal :-)

What fish are you getting for the 60 mate ?

Biggles, would you ever trust Portland White Cement #1 in YOUR tank when scaping rock & mending them together?

Would you trust making rocks or reef discs out of them, given enough curing time?

No i wouldn't use cement in a reef simply because i only use live rock in my reefs and for sticking rocks together i think super glue and putty work fine. I usually cut two rocks in such a way that they sort of lock together and then just add the putty and glue to really lock the join up. If i couldn't use LR i'd use dead stuff like the Marco stuff and treat it for phos leeching before putting it in the water. I know bugger all about the cement rock making but it's just not something i'd ever feel comfy with in the display, that's just me and doesn't mean i think cement is dangerous etc.

:mad2: Here is my tank FTS:

TOTM material right there Sahin......... Kevin says a 6" PBT would look great in there swimming with a school of yellow tangs........

Lol if i was skilled at keeping SPS corals i wouldn't need be having all these problems...... bloody hopeless considering i tell everyone else to do things properly
I do want a 40x40x18" cube to run beside this display but that has to wait until money isn't tight unfortunately. That's why i want the sump lit with T5's so i can make a nano to play with in the meantime. If i had that running i could put a flame angel or other beautiful but risky angel with the SPS and not have any probs catching it if it plays up - last time i was at Reeflections they had 3 that were stunning with top notch colors and i've seen hundreds. One way or another i'm going to have a flame angel after all these bloody years going with out :deadhorse1:

I'm very proud of my blue stag, he's shading the green acro and even has a new growth tip forming at the edge of the encrusting tissue which will really shadow his nasty neighbour. That lip is extended a good 1/2" out over the top of the green thing. :) The interaction between corals is really interesting if you take the time to snoop closely in your reef, acros changing their growth pattern in response to another acro's attack isn't always a retreat.

@ Troub, that was hilarious!!!

@ Sahin, definite TOTM, you've got my vote bro :p. and you're right, I'm the cunning stunt :p. BTW, leaving on the holiday tomorrow.....Nervous!!!

@ FastUno, a more expensive option is KZ Speed Glue

@ biggles, getting bloody sneakier I see, aiming for the gold standard in sneakiness eh?. The 6 bulb T5 should be interesting over the sump. Thought about a lower light SPS experiment? Considering the main display is blasted with light, how about even a 4 bulb fixture? Just curious.... 'sperimenting' biggles :p

The structure of the new nasty brown one is quite interesting. Don't think I've seen too many similar ones in your tank, have I?

Since I'm leaving tomorrow, I see that you've clearly gone out of your way to bloody **** me off :furious:. The blue stag is stunning!!! With stunning DARK blue polyps!! Damn you biggles, damn you to hell!! And I'm supposed to be the sneaky one? Sahin, move over...Biggles has moved to number 1!!

And a flame angelfish?? well, you've got my vote for that one. I'd have loved to see a colini, but truth be told, they're not close to as gorgeous as a flame IMO. Hopefully he behaves

I'm looking at getting a bangia cardinal, stary blenny or yashi gobie and shrimp, carpenters flasher wrasse ( one of the most beautiful fish iv seen), fire fish and my two clowns that have the tank to them selfs at the moment..... lucky little fishies.
What do you think?

Hey Troub, sorry mate i've been slack as usual lol. Here's a pic showing a monti who's surrounded by acros. He's going to be completely devoured when the acros wake up and start encrusting again. This stupid monti turned ugly grey blue yucky colored months back soon after getting it which is why i plastered it in acro frags. Now that it's soon to die it has decided to begin coloring back up :debi:

News flash for you monti - too bloody late mate, too bloody late !

I can buy a 4 tube T5 unit and just add another twin unit down the track if needed so i'll give 4 bulbs a go for a while and see what happens.
I have 2 other small bits of that brown acro in different spots to see how much light it needs but none of the other acros are the same species as far as i can tell looking at the structure.
The flame may need the 'whack' treatment if he misbehaves........ i have had success with a 10 minute visit in the skimmer reaction chamber but the fish tend to have trouble staying under water when i return them to the display....... it's cutting edge behavioral science.

I'd go with the gobie and shrimp mate, i have a banggai and all he does is sit in the corner doing nothing unless i put food in the water. He refuses to participate in any fishy activities with the others so i basically ignore him lol.

Wow mate, lovely assortment of colours. Shame about the monti...its a nice colour too...not bloomin' green.

WOW... so much color! I think I got dizzy just looking at it. That's an interesting shot, thanks for sharing it!

It just looks like it's getting swallowed up! :blown:

Is that a Xmas tree worm there photobombing the bottom left too? Maybe 2 of them popping out to watch the war going on from that purple w/ green polyp acro. They better be careful, Potatohead is going to get angry about them taking his sneaky spot in your close ups! I hope P-H is doing ok, I haven't seem in creeping into many shots lately?

And FYI. I think my tank is really coming along. I MAYBE have 2 of those colors from your picture in my tank right now. LOL. That's ok though, I'll start with 2 colors and work my way up from there.

Oh, and really, I'm not so sure on the "coming along" for my tank. I woke up to a cloudy DT, fuge, and sump this morning. My first thought was my jimmy-rigged return spout for the fuge fell off and it was blasting into the sand causing a storm. After checking all powerheads, pumps, etc... everything seemed fine. And I find it hard to believe the tiny Pistol Shrimp could cloud up the tank that badly! So I just left it be and am hoping it's all crystal clear when I arrive home tonight.

Thanks for the kind words as always guys. I'll chase you up in your journal about what's up with your water Troubster as Kevin has demanded he be allowed to post some of his pics today. He's bloody lazy so he doesn't put a lot of time into getting the white balance perfect but the'y're weekend top downs so who cares.........

Now you see him Troub

Let me know if you want more and i'll throw Kevin back up onto the light canopy with the phone camera, he whinges that the halide singes his fur - what a wimp.

Thanks guys :)

Yes both those pieces are SSC like acros but from different dive collectors. It's likely that they won't be pals just because they have similar colors lol......
No idea what that chalice thing is tbh mate, the colors are pretty awesome on it which is the only reason i decided to keep it.

Kevin is working on another batch of top downs so here's the very front right section, the aculeus table is turning glow in the dark as expected and should look ridiculous in another month or so. :)
