My attempt at breeding black clowns (in a 28 gallon mixed reef)

I only had about 5 deaths today. I had about 35 the 1st day, 25, the 2nd, and then 5 today. Hopefully things go ok while I am on vacation this weekend. This will be my first time away from the babies. Hopefully the do OK under my Mom's care.

Do you have two tanks going at the same time or did you put the new batch of babies in with the older ones? If not is this possible?
 
I started a second tank that is the same setup as I used for the 1st batch; 5.5 gallon glass tank with a heater, air stone, and ammonia alert badge.
It is not possible to add them together and keep the alive. The bigger guys create a lot of wast an need a filter that would wipe out all of the rotifers that the small ones are feeding on, that and the big guys might even be able to eat the newly hatched larva.
 
Thats what I was thinking after I posted my question. O darn I guess I might have to set up another tank! ;)
 
I moved two of the older guys into a 20 gallon. If they are still happy in the morning I will move the others to free up the 5.5 gallon tank for the next batch of fry.

I am not sure. I have not lost any of the 1st batch in well over a month. I am counting them as I move them over to the 20 gallon tank. At this point I have moved 23 of the.
 
well keep up the good work. I envy you and hopefully one day this will be my thread. I have always wanted to try my hand at breeding. So far I have not had any spawns. Im being patient and hopefully in the future I will. Until then I'm following along and living the experiece through you. Thanks for sharing your experience.

aquaph8 - Thanks for the very kind words. I am sure that your clowns will spawn eventually.

silveroak - Yes, this was the 1st time they spawned. I had a pair of true percula clown (for 11 or so years) that would spawn frequently. They were in a 120 gallon tanks so it would have been hard to collect the fry. I never took the effort to rear any of them and unfortunately the female died a few months ago.
 
The 3rd batch hatched a day earlier than I expected. I just spent the last 1.5 hours catching them. I gave up before all of them hatched. I am not sure if the rest will hatch tonight or tomorrow. I can see that I have a new problem though, one of the two cardinals in the tank figured out that pen light = food. I think I lost 10+ of the fry to the cardinal.

This thread has been very helpful and inspiring so I've decided to give this a shot. My B&W pair has been spawning for about a year now but i've never attempted to raise a spawn. The clowns laid eggs on 8/11/09 @ 6:30 pm and i'm going to raise them. I've ordered the Roti basic you've recommended and have already been reading Joyce's book for some time. I'm going to copy your methods in this thread: 5.5 g tank, 2x 5 g buckets and the Roti basic. This is already very exciting, I'd recommend it to everyone with a pair of clowns!

Tahoe Reefer - Sounds like a plan! It is not really that hard to do after you get your routine down. Let me know if you have any questions.
 
I got another large batch of eggs. She placed them in the same spot last night as all of the previous batches.
