My Bigger Piece of the Reef (LotsOPics)

I like it !

It looks like a real reef shelf.

It leaves plenty of growth and swim space.

Servicing may be a bit difficult though, once populated.

I give it a solid "A"

;)

Thanks...

My goals were to make a pleasurable place for my animals with lots of places for corals, hiding places for fish, (blennies and gobies are my favorites) and plenty of swimming space for others like tangs and anthias. I also wanted it to be eye catching.

did you adhere the rock to the back wall or is that foam?

It is Marco Rocks attached to egg crate with zip ties and then I filled in the gaps with foam.

I coated it with an epoxy finishing resin and then stuck sand and crushed coral to it.

I got this idea from Tiggsy who has an awesom 180 cube in this section.

I was going to do something like this but I didn't bother.Looking at your I should have done it.It looks so nice.I think if I ever get another tank I will take the time to do it.

Thanks for the compliments... Let me know when and I'll tell you the mistakes I made and how it might have been better.

I called the company that makes the resin because I wanted to make sure it would be safe and they said that it would need 6 hours to cure but, must be cured above 75 degrees. That's why I coated it in the house instead of in the garage where I did most of the work. After it was coated... I put it in the tank and turned on 2 of the 3 lights so that it would get warm in there.

I think it is very interesting and has a lot of possibilites. Like was mentioned, there is some realism portrayed and with careful coral placement could be very cool.

I would tend to use finer/smaller coral structures to keep the illusion strong. You may have to play with the lighting a bit, but I think this will turn out very nice.

There has been some discussion of late about eggcrate possibly leaching chemicals into the water column, but I don't have any proof of that. Many reef keepers have noticed accelerated algal growth when using eggcrate.

Please tell me some corals you would recommend and can the algae be battled?

Hair algae seems to be the culprit. Some get it others don't. In the future acrylic rather tham styrene(cheap HD stuff that shatters when you cut it) is the way to go. I only get it in my sump even after pulling out the styrene.

I'd just make sure you try to keep up on the water parameters so it doesn't even start. I tend to leave my filter socks in until they jsut about clog. I'm going to clean my sump again in a couple of days and start changing the socks everyday and see if that has any effect on regrowth. I'll let you know. Much better never to get it to begin with than to battle it IMO.

This is the cheap stuff from THD that shatters when you cut it. And, I agree... better to never get it.
