My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

Are your clowns black ocellaris or black true percs. I see your title says ocellaris but LFS just said black clowns are true percs and come from aussy
Yah, that's not true. I think C-Quest has been breeding black O's since the early 80's.

Well I thought last night was hatch night... No hatch. I attached some pictures to show what I'm doing with the bubbles. You can see the little buggers lay the eggs right at the top which forces me to put more water in the larvae tank. I have to put the pop bottle cap between the tile and the glass to allow the bubbles to escape so they don't build up around the eggs. I forgot my camera from work so I could do a video. I'll try and remember tonight. I hope my eggs will hatch tonight. We'll see. I don't have a good feeling about them being under an airstone that long.

I've never had them over an airstone for more than just the hatch night. They did hatch last night and it looks like a complete hatch (only 5 unhatched mostly near the top edge) so 2 days is doable. Hopefully it doesn't affect the mortality rate. I remembered my camera from work and took a video last night to show you the speed of the bubbles.

Thanks for the video of the bubbles. My hatch rate is no where near what you get. Since my pair laid eggs yesterday, I will try adjusting the bubbles on hatch night to match what is in your video to see if I get improvement.

Also, I never get a complete hatch on one night; always takes two. I have noticed that the fry that hatch on the second night look small compared to the fry that hatch on the first night. Maybe the second night hatch is just fry that have developed slower for some reason.

Thanks for the videos, it really showed, i never thought they can withstand that fast bubble rates, good to know

I'm glad it helped. You are pulling the eggs on hatch night right sandyc? Have yours just started laying eggs? The bubbles are beating the eggs pretty good. I don't know about yours but my male really beats at the eggs at times.

Yes, I pull the eggs on hatch night. My pair lays eggs on a tile. My clowns have been laying eggs for 4-5 years. I only recently tried to raise them. I had 3 unsuccessful attempts before I got things worked out. My first successful batch is now 25 days old. The parents recently laid more eggs.

I have had my bubbles set higher than yours. I will try gating it down a bit.

I have a pair of black and white clowns as well.. they still have their orange faces though.. Hopefully mine will follow suit!

Congrats!!!!

Black Ocellaris are notorious for not being easy to raise so it doesn't really surprise me sandyc. Just save what you can.

They will get blacker as they get older E.intheC Good luck with yours.

Ok here's the latest. I took 15 to a LFS near me and re arranged my tanks a little. I stocked up the 30g some more and mixed some smaller ones in a 15 so I could have an empty 15 for my first drilling attempt. I was pretty sure it wasn't tempered and took a gamble. Well it worked out and drilled pretty good. I had some trouble getting it started and some chipping on exit but it didn't break so I'm going to call that a success. I installed my bulkhead hand tight. I'm using the Pentair ones that come with a hose adapter and strainer. I hope to pickup some pipe and get some plumbing done this weekend. I'd like 3 tanks running together for now. Then we'll see..

In my re arranging I had one about 1" long die from the stress off it all. Today I had about 20 week old ones die. I had put a sponge filter in yesterday and topped up the tank some. I must have changed the water too fast. I don't know how some are keeping sponge filters in their Rot cultures. I put it in the larvae tank last night and tonight all the Rots are gone. I have it on low with no lift tube installed...

Here's some pics.

I like the color of the orange in the noses. It will be no problem though when they get darker. I like 'em both way. Your babies look AWESOME! It's actually what I meant when I said I wanted them to follow suit.. I want mine to breed. :-)

I thought drilling would be a lot harder as well. I have yet to break a tank......well while drilling anyway. I always get a little bit of chipping the other side.

Are you sure all your rots were not eatan and had nothing to do with the sponge filter. My rots were doing great with the sponge filter until I ran out of food. I have yet to restart my culture as I have no eggs.

How much are you getting for your BW's if you don't mind me asking

I hate losing fish!!!

Its too much of a coincidence FB. Its happened multiple times. I know it has to be the filter. Its done it like 4 times now. I put it in one day and the next they are gone. I must have dumb / slow rots... PM sent.

Well I got one of my tanks set up. I had 2 running but I broke one... I had it all setup and running and decided to put my skimmer in.. Well my skimmer was too tall to fit so I decided to cut a hole in the lower shelf to lower the sump. With all the plumbing it was hard to get the sump out and I didn't notice I was pulling on the return of one of one of the tanks and snap. I was already low on tanks. Now I'm screwed. Where I live 10g tanks are like $50 - $60 Toronto is 2 hours away and I'm not driving all the way there for a tank so I'll have to get by for now. I need to free up a tank for tomorrow night so I'll have to put some more together that probably shouldn't be. My alternative is to try and raise this batch in a salt bucket. Has anyone else done this? Here's some pics.

The exact same thing I did. Pulled on the wrong pipe at the wrong time and snap.

I don't see a problem with raising them in a salt bucket. I have actually heard that round tanks are better for it.

Good Luck

Welcome to the club :D

A salt bucket should work fine. Doesn't have to be a glass tank, just hold water and be non toxic ;)
