My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

Well the eyes started going silver 2 days ago. They were all silver yesterday and today. I think they still look silver I can't really see any bronze. I hope they hatch tonight vaporize. I really don't want to be up late Sunday night. Here's some more pics

Here's my larvae setup. Its a 10g. I couldnt find any paper but wrapping paper. I think its nice. I have a airstone and a heater in there. The air manifold is so I can tune down the bubbles.

Here's what I'm going to use as a growout tank. Its a 29 gallon. I have a Fluval 3 for filtration. (the sponges are in my sump seeding)

They hatched!! ugh what a night. I went down to check on the larval tank and the temperature was 90deg. The heater was dying. So off I go (in a snow storm I might add) to <gulp> WalMart for a heater. They are the only thing open at 9:00 at night around here that carries aquarium stuff. I count 53 fry. Some are very active and seem to be feeding the rotifers. Many are just sitting on the bottom doing nothing. I added phyto to tint the water as I have heard this helps. I have to go finish plowing the driveway so I can get to hockey in the morning. I'll post pics tomorrow am.

Congrats! Snowstorm? What Dads will do for their babies. If I were you, I would change the paper you have on your larval tank to a very dark color since you are trying to eliminate the side light. The white paper will only reflect the light from above and not serve the purpose of darkening the sides (I'm assuming that you will have a light on top)

Good luck and stay warm!

Here's some pictures. I see I have some loss already. I'm having a hard time keeping the temperature up. It dropped to 75. I bought a 50w heater. Its really cold in my basement. (old farm house) I wrapped the tank in a blanket this morning.

Here's a pic of them in the bucket I used to transfer / count them.

Here they are in their new home

Well the fry seem to be feeding. I don't know how you could tell they are so small. I'm still having trouble getting the heat to stabilize in the tank. The death toll is 8 as of tonight. I split my Rotifer batch in the pail and I now have 2 pails going. They seem to be multiplying fast. I split my phyto too. I hope I have enough to keep the rotifers fed. Does anyone know if I should be doing a water change? I added some phyto to the water as I've been told the green colour helps them feed. When I feed the Rotifers I'm straining them through a coffee filter so as no to add the water from the culture. I only have 5 gallons of water in the 10g tank. Should it be filled?

Good job~~ :) Rkelman

will you be selling the babies?

you ready to drive up to Canada to get them? ;)

Hey if you pay for my flight I'll fly the little suckers down there! I've lost 14 so far. Only 1 in the last 48 hours so that's good. Hopefully it keeps going this way. I changed the paper on the sides to black plastic so they stay off the sides. I don't really notice any difference though in their habits. Sometimes they hang out on the sides sometimes they swim around the middle. They are noticibly stronger / better swimmers. I need to start thinking about my next food for them. My wife is going to pickup a brine hatchery and eggs tomorrow. Is one of those little ones enough does anyone know? I'd post more pictures but they look pretty much the same... I will after metamorphisis <sp>?

I got home from work today and my Clowns have spawned again. Exactly 14 days later. There are alot more eggs this time. I have around 40 fry still alive from the last spawn. I haven't had any die in 3 days. Now I think I have too much Rotifers and not enough Phyto.. Live and learn I guess. I only have 1 pop bottle of Phyto ready and 2 5 gallon pails of rotifers. I'm adding phyto to the fry tank as well. It seems to help with feeding frequency and they go nuts when I add it. They eat much better now when there is lots of phyto in the water. I need to find a way to boost my phyto production. I could really use some advice. When I split my culture I add the fertalizer per the instructions. It doesn't say anything about adding more in the 2 weeks it takes to culture.. I also need a second food and I can't find brine shrimp eggs locally. Here's a pic of the new spawn. I count about 270 eggs this time. I couldn't count last time but I think there was only 60-70 eggs last time.

I have switched from live phyto to Instant Algae from ReedMariculture. Much easier and my rotifers are doing great now! As far as brine shrimp, I was using just the regular dry eggs to hatch but I now buy the decapsilated brine eggs from SeaHorseSource.com and what a difference in the production and the end result. No eggs shells to deal with, only brine shrimp. I think this is definitely the way to go and worth the extra money.

This is one of the coolest things I have seen on this site, I have a pair of these clowns. How long did you have them until they spawned? Also would someone be so kind to post a link on how to do all the spawning steps? I am lost on how and why you did all the stuff you did to get from eggs to where you are now.

1 post since 2005 chevo69? I guess you did like this thread if it inspired you to post after that long lol. I have had the fish about a year. They were juvis when I got them. You can't really force / make them spawn. They have to be sexually mature and paired. Feed them well and mother nature should take over. Thanks Justartedreefer.

Yeah man this one made me come out of the dark. No I really signed up for it and browse every now and then but was active in another forum that just kind of stopped. I'm sure this has been posted somewhere but I couldn't find it last night. What are the step for the fry I have no idea what some of this stuff is you have set up. Do you plan on selling the fish? That would be some easy cash here in Denver you cant get these fish for under $50 - $60......
