My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

you sure are busy rkelman. this thread will probably inspire many who have clownfish in their tanks. i have a small 10g freshwater tank right now trying to keep them alive, well and healthy. i do want to get a 50g SW tank in the future with a few clowns and a watchman goby with a pistol shrimp. hopefuly the added company wont shy the clowns from doing their thing as i would like to try my had at raising these cute little fish. keep up the good work!

Thanks coda. Welcome to RC! Go with 2 clowns coda 3 is a crowd :) No the added company won't worry the clowns. They are pretty easy going as long as there isn't predators harrassing them all the time you should be fine. I have alot of fish in my tank. (too many actually)

youll love clowns they have aome of the best personalitys i have 2 false percs and im going to be black percs soon

thanks for the assurance that added company wont make a pair of clowns shy. i'd like to keep the bio load as small as possible so i can run a juvie tank from the same sump as the parent's display. what are some fish that would swim in the middle to upper part of the waters?

any update on your latest batch?

I wouldn't run a juvie tank on the same system. You don't want parasites ect from the parent tank killing your fry. As well the pollution from the fry tank is not going to help your reef any. Coral beautys / Flame Angels are good additions.. Most fish are compatible with clowns. Just research before you buy. My latest batch is doing well. I don't know how many there are though. There is no way I started with 400 larvae.. I don't know what happened to them all. I think I've lost about 100 since hatching. My dang ammonia alert badge has killed probably 20.. I had to move it to over the airstone so they don't go under it and get stuck. I even had moved it flat on the bottom and this morning there was like 10 dead under it. Very strange. The remaining ones are doing quite well. They are fat and strong. My 3rd pail of Rots is coming in nicely. I have lots of Rots which is good. I think the trick is to really load the tank with Rots initially so I'm not always playing catchup. I'm going to build a rack system and purchase some more tanks so There will be a build to follow soon :)

this is still a long way in the future still. i live in a 1 bedroom apartment right now and they want a pet deposit for a tank bigger then 10g. when raising these little guys, how does one feed them frequently enough if scheduling keeps you away from home 12 or 13 hours at a time? would a dense feeding (rots) in the morning be enough for young fry to keep them going until arriving home?

My maroons just laid eggs for the first time :p I'm going to go through all this very helpful info and try to raise some fry myself. Thanks for your detailed thread, it's going to help a lot.

Yes I only feed Rots twice a day coda. Good I'm glad it helped you Mydraal. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

They have laid again. This one is bigger than the last I think. I didn't count them. I couldnt get the camera to focus clear enough. The last batch is doing well. As I said before there is way less than the number of eggs I had. Who knows what happened to them. I am really having a hard time with ammonia with this batch. I can't seem to get it down. I've done huge water changes and I'm using Amquel. I put a sponge filter in today. Hopefully that helps. I think there is about 200 left. They seem to be strong and active. I still can't control the phyto in my 17 day olds tank.. Its really weird. I haven't had this problem before. Last night I put a ton of Rots in the water to try and clear it up. This morning all the Rots are gone and the water is green lol. Oh well there are worse problems to have I suppose. My wife wants me to build a bigger rack system so I can house the phyto and rots in the same place as well. So I'll integrate them into it. It will be nice to have everything together. Really I would love another way to hatch BBS. I sink the hatchery in a fry tank so the temperature is high enough to hatch the shrimp. (80deg) I don't know what others are doing so some input would be appreciated.

You do not need a clear pic to count the eggs. Just blow the pic up with photo editing software, print it, and use a pen to mark the ones you count. I once counted 642 (first chrysopterus nest).

I could do that I suppose Marina. I usually use paint and put a dot on each one. So basically the same method. I think this nest is bigger than the last one. Every nest keeps getting bigger. My first batch are 6 or 7 weeks now coda.

It will be interesting to document the size of the nest in progression and the % of survivors without deformities.

People/person down under seem to be able to produce very nice looking black Os. The ones that I have seen from ORA are not the same (I see a lot of ubderbite in their clowns, they are small, misbars) and only a few are found in the Washington metro area.

Dangit my 1000th post is bad news. They are eating the eggs.. I think its because I used my tongs to push the anemone back so I could get a clear picture to count. I think I stressed them causing them to eat the nest. Maybe the experts will chime in on this. This morning there was 1/4 of the eggs left. I likely won't bother with this batch if there is any left to hatch. If the numbers are too low its just not worth the work.

Thanks samoyedsrule. About 14 days agsansoo. Its funny they are alternating between laying on tuesdays and thursdays my wife pointed out this morning.. Very strange.

I love all the pictures in your thread. Each time I see the baby clowns I turn into mush.

Wonderful job on all your hard work. Hopefully in a couple of years I will have time to start a project like this. My pair of black clowns are still very young.
