Nothing from my new pair of O's yet but they are settling in nicely and have become comfortable with me. They weren't eating much for the first couple weeks but now they are looking for food every time I'm downstairs. I've also decided to keep the Perc pair. They are chillin in a clay pot in the growout sump for now.

Can you post a picture of your rot culture area? Also what temp do yours cultures stay at? Mine get pretty cold as they are on the basement floor and its getting very cold outside(This is prolly summer weather for you though). I can get my cultures very dense but once I start feeding, they never seem to get really good again until I start a new culture from the old one.

On some of your earlier pics - I can clearly see the clownfish fry and the rotifer density. If you scooped a cup of that rotifer water out - could you see them with your naked eye? I'm having a hard time figuring out if my rots are "alive" or have crashed. My culture from MOFIB was in two small vials (free from MACNA) and I think it'll take a few weeks before they reach a density that is suitable for harvesting.

My rot culturing "area" is 3 pails on the floor Mine are very cold right now and aren't producing much. I haven't had any eggs in a while so I don't need them. Our weather is similar to yours John we aren't that far away from each other In the winter I throw a small 50w heater in each pail to keep them around 70 and that gives me great density. Sometimes starting a new culture is best I agree. They multiply like crazy under the better water conditions. Some people put a sponge filter in theirs.
Yes Phil you should be able to see the rots. It should look like dust specs in the water. What container did you start your culture in? Nothing to huge I hope. It will take a while for them to get to be useable but not as long as you may think. They can double every day so they reproduce really fast. I use black electrical tape to cover the light on my heater if I'm using a glass one. I use mostly stealth heaters though. If you don't cover the light they will fry..

I picked up a 5x magnifier from a sporting goods store and grab a couple mls in one of those test tube bottles from an old test kit. Shine a light and you can see them pretty well. You can even count them if you are as retentive as me and want to know the density in your fry tank.
I grow my rots in 5-gal buckets with insulation wrapped around. That stuff that looks like bubble wrap with foil sides. Kept them warm all winter in the garage... of course it's warmer here:beachbum:

thanks for the answer guys. This thread has been really great. I think my rots culture crashed and my local source doesn't have any more available for sale until next week. I think my perc eggs will hatch in 24 hrs to 48 hrs. I guess I will call reed to overnight some rots.
The container i started with was a 5 gallon bucket. I used Rotifer Feast to feed the "bucket". Unfortunately the culture continues to appear rather green (as opposed to getting lighter in color).

rkelman - have your fry always hatched at dusk? I don't know what happened but when I came in this afternoon the clutch was gone. The lights are on and I was really disappointed I didn't have an opportunity to try and save some. The eggs were laid on 10-14 and they had the "silvery" look this morning. Sigh..bummed but hoping your magic rubs off!
Rkelman, I've skimmed back through your thread, but couldn't find where you talk about your water changes for the first couple of weeks. Did you say you didn't change the water until after Meta??
For the new larvae tank, how much Amquel are you adding per day for the 10 gallon tank? And then when do you do routine water changes - how much and how often?
My pH is low right now - 7.8, but I have 1.0 ammonia, 0.50 nitrite, and bet. 20-30 nitrate. I can't decide whether to leave it alone, do a partial water change, or just drip in some new saltwater to dilute it. I have about 6 gallons of water in a 10 gallon tank. Wilkerson's book says if you have low pH and some ammonia, to leave it alone. But then she says make a partial water change if there's nitrite. Clowns101: They spawned last on 07/30/2009 and they just spawned tonight! I won't be raising this clutch but its nice to see eggs again.

I'm adding the Amquel per the instructions. I think 1/2 a cap in a 10g. Its been so long since I was at that point I forget My routine water changes are about 30% weekly.
I would leave that tank. Doing a water change will stress the fry and raise the ph making the ammonia more toxic. I wouldn't loose any sleep over the ammonia that's not killing your clowns. 3-4 day old fry die no matter what. I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. You are doing all you can do and ammonia doesn't affect the fry much anyways. They aren't overly sensitive.

So correct me if Im wrong but is this what you do in oreder to get the fry to adult hood?
1.Parents spawn
2.collect the tile/or fry when they hatch.
3.put tile in tank and have small bubbles going over them.
4.Once they hatch put in rots.
5.Dont change any water and add amquill(what does it do?)
6.Once they reach meta do small change.
7.Put in grow out.
8.Feed baby brine and some flake food.
9.Let grow and sell.( mabey sell)
Let me know if I left anything out!
