My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

Sorry for the late reply. I missed your posts.

Thanks for the condolences. I do appreciate it. It still makes my stomach roll when I think of all those dead fish.

9 pairs? You are nuts :)

Congrats on your spawn!

I'm sorry your device didn't work. I would have recommended against it had I seen your posts earlier. You'll find that ANYTHING that touches ANYTHING in your larvae tank is a trap and will kill babies. That means the heater / airstone etc. If at all possible have the heater / airstone hang so they don't touch the bottom. The larvae will wiggle under them and die. I don't use a sponge filter until they have their first stripes for just that reason.

If there's anything I can help with please ask. I promise I'll be quicker in my response.

I've been missing the day of the hatch. I look for the silvery eggs, but not all are silvery. Do I wait till most of the eggs are silvery? tia

The most reliable method is counting days. If you've had a few hatches now how many days from the time they lay until they hatch?

Sorry rkelman. I'm not sure when the eggs were laid. Last time, I believe it took about 10 days - not sure because when they did not hatch after an hour after lights out, I figured they would hatch the next day. So I put the pumps back on and went to sleep. But the eggs did hatch, I just wasn't around.

I'm trying to see the eyes like you had in your pic. A few of the eggs are shiny now. I'm wondering if maybe most of the eggs that are not shiny are duds (for lack of a better word).

Have you heard of eggs hatching on the 11th or 12th day?

btw, thank you for the response. Your thread has been invaluable.

Yes I've had them hatch on day 11 before. You could always just take your best guess at it. If you are wrong you'll just have to get up the next night :)

Hello rkelman,
I have a question for you about the lighting that your using on your phyto cultures. What type of light bulb is the bulb? What color spectrum? Is it a fresh water or saltwater bulb?

Thanks!

Sorry if you posted this already!

Hi, I don't culture phyto anymore. I use Rotifer Diet from Reeds. I was using normal shop light fluorescent bulbs.

Hi there...

Hope I'm not butting in here, but : )

I have a steady culture of phytoplankton (nanocropolis) going at all times. My husband built a simple wooden stand to hold the culture bottles, the length of pvc with the valves/airline and the light. We're using an old 36 inch hood light with an old style white fluorescent bulb at least an inch away from the bottles. Works well for us.

Best wishes!

It works wonderfully. I recently started doing something new to my process after reading the clown fish bible, Clownfishes, by Joyce D. Wilkerson. Dr. W suggested growing phytoplankton with a 24 hr light cycle, not turning the light off at all. This is my 3 third batch using this method and it works great! My cultures are extremely dense now by day 7. It's cut my cycle time down by 2 - 3 days! Good thing too 'cause my rotifers are growing at staggering rates and I'm needing to feed them more often.

:bounce3:wow :bounce3:that thread was truely amazing. i dont even no what to say but it was soooooooooooooo cool!! haha i put off a 5 page paper due tomorrow for this and let me tell you it was well worth it!!!! haha bunches of luck to you!! :blown: thats what ill do if my teachers get mad at me im the blue guy hes red. now off to bed, well i guess ill have to do that paper :rolleye1: see ya in the am!

Thanks folks I appreciate the kind words. I'll get some more pics / updates going soon. The orange guys and the last batch of black ones look great. I dropped a BTA in their tank. Its cool to see the little ones hosted by it.

Ok here they are at 47 days. Well the Orange guys are at 47 the black guys are at 44. Its really interesting (to me at least) the Orange guys are developing alot faster. Here's some pics.

I love the lips on this guy.

I put a GBTA in with them for kicks. (its the same water as the parent tank so it was fine for a few days) They don't look very green under my crappy lights. They were in the BTA in a hour. Who says tank raised fish won't be hosted by nems? You can see very clearly the developmental differences in the fry.

I missed the last hatch of the orange guys i'll have to pull the tube on day 7 next time...

I guess that's why they call it "Fish Lips"! lol

They look really healthy!!!

How large are they (not the lips, but the fish :D) and what are you feeding them now?

Thanks, The orange guys are probably close to 1/2" the Black ones are maybe 3/8" nose to the tip of the tail. They are eating Otohime B2 and Cyclopleeze
