Wow that is pretty small. That ammonia sure did a number on him.

Please don't take this as slamming you but here is one of mine @ 4 days for comparison purposes.

Keep those rotifers going! Yes, you need to harvest them and your reef will love you for it. I was amazed to see how my corals perked up when I feed the rotifers to the tank. Be sure to split your culture into maybe 2,3 or 4 in case of a crash.

 i guess that's what i will do then feed some of my corals for a couple of days so the cultures do not get out of hand and crash. I currently have 2 dedicated cultures in 5g tanks and i have a 5g bucket that has rotifers and brine as well.

I think FB's fry are on steroids !

lol wish mine were:sad1:
boy did it get hot around here yesterday 105 it is never that hot here. We also had a couple of fires that broke out here in my town, the sky was crazy with all kinds of stuff falling on my roof, we had a couple of friends that were evacuated and hung out at our place for a while until the roads opened back up. Crazy day.....

update: Lucky is still alive....:D

Same here in So. Cal. Temperatures hovered near and above the 100 degree level throughout Saturday. Along with power outages ! (not me) I'm replace the batteries on my emergency air pumps right now !

Crazy weekend of fires & weather anyways;
Sad post Lucky's luck ran out he was alive last night; but this morning; :thumbdown :sad1: (made it to the 20th day & still no change in size or meta...

I have been keeping an eye on the latest batch of eggs in my reef on the tile and it seems to me that slowly everyday more & more of the eggs are disappearing:eek2:

I have checked on them on/off during lights on & lights off and have not caught any of my shrimp near the eggs; 1 cleaner shrimp & 2 peppermints.

The only thing i have noticed after lights out around the eggs has been limpets & asternia starfish would either of these be responsible for the reduction in the egg mass or is it just DAD cleaning house and keeping the good ones??

Poor little Lucky. You still are doing better than I did my first 8 hatches. I lost eggs this last time also. I wonder if the heat has anything to do it ?

I would bet it is good housekeeping.

RIP Lucky!

fb; do you mean housekeeping by the male clown or me??
I did vacuum lucky's tank last night and was going to place him in the breeder net that i picked up yesterday but oh well

I just read that on your thread as well (about the egg loss) Maybe it could be the heat on Friday my reef reached 83.4
and the larvae tank in the garage was close to 85. Not sure what happened to some of the eggs. I am a little worried that the higher temps will change the time it usually takes for my eggs to be ready (about 9 days so far) maybe i will pull batch #2 a day early to be safe?

I would, warmer temps usually makes for earlier hatch times.

:D I think the eggs are down to about half of what i started with at this point so i guess he is either a neat freak or something else is going on.

I'd watch a day early...

I even starting thinking about taking them out sooner due to the reduction of eggs that seems to be happening..

Good luck with round Dos! I'll be patiently tagging along again!!!

Thanks you & me both; lol..

I think you have to verify that they are being eatan by a preditor. If it is the father doing house cleaning than you may cause problems leaving these unviable eggs next to good eggs withouth the father there to clean.

EDIT: I also read somewhere maybe Joyce's book that it may take a couple of batchs for mom and dad to get the whole spawning thing correct. Not sure if that is the types of problems you are having (ie unfertalized eggs). Or the dad may not be tending very well and they are not getting enough movement.

Just a thought.

FB

FB; yep that's my issue at the moment i suppose is trying to figure out if or what may be eating the eggs.

The pair started spawning in feb of this year only a month after being moved into the new tank.

As far as the dad's care goes; when there are eggs he is always doing something with them it seems: either mouthing, fanning etc. he really only seems to leave the nest alone for a couple of quick bites to eat, but at lights out he tends to snuggle up with her in the anemone at night and i think this is when something might be taking the eggs.

I have tried sneaking up on the tank after lights out with a flashlight to try and catch someone in the act, so far nothing, but it seems to me to be to many eggs lost at this point.

Random question, but I have night visiion on my vid cam, might this be a good resource to use for night viewing?

I would try to make a very good mental note of what the eggs look like b4 lights out/or take a pic, and then do first thing in the morning. If dad is tending to them during the day, but none are dissappearing then its got to be happening at night. From there its time for a couple of redbulls and a patient eye at night time.
