My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

When I get a bottle of the Nanno 3600, I divide it into 2 oz. cups and freeze it. I defrost it, dilute it with r/o water in a quart bottle and keep it in the refrigerator. It lasts me for 2-3 days. It works for me!

I highly advise against that. You are giving your rotifers an inferior food source which can result in poor nutrition in your larvae.

I'll try this on one of my buckets of rotifers and a hatch of larvae. I'll try mixing it with r/o water just before I feed it to the rotifers and see if I notice any difference. I'll let you know!

regardless of outcome we still highly advise against it. By diluting you have compromised the shelf life greatly. What you are doing is actually causing it to start to break down, even in the cold. Using ASW would be much better but still ill advised.

Gresham- On a slightly different note, is there any possiblility that the Otohime's can be offered in smaller quantities, in possibly the $25 range? I have a bag of C1 that will last me 5 lifetimes and I'm afraid to get any of the other, larger sizes for the same reason. Is there a shelf life on the Otohimes?

I use Roti diet. I just pull it out of the freezer and cut a piece off and dilute it at the time of use. Well it lasts 2 days in the bottle I use.

I do agree subman 2kg packages are huge. I buy my c2 in those packages but I don't need that much A..

oto smaller sizes

oto smaller sizes

Call reed and ask for the smaller bags that normally come in the started package. They will hook you up. I got oto A and I think the package was under $15.00.

For those diluting please read this page:

http://www.reed-mariculture.com/microalgae/directions.asp

specifically this part:

Mixing

Instant Algae© products can be used immediately without any mixing or dilution NEVER use a blender to mix the algae as this will rupture the cells.

If your water salinity is below 20 PPT (1.015 specific gravity) we recommend putting the algae concentrate dosage in a bucket or bowl, then slowly adding a bit of your system water while stirring. This will minimize osmotic pressure changes inside the algae cells. This is very seldom a problem.

So not only are you compromising the shelf life, you're also possibly bursting the cells. FWIW I have never had an issue with putting IA products directly into culture but to ut it into RODI pretty much guarantees there will be cells bursting :(

Ok, Update... and I sure hope I don't jinx myself by writing this.... Since I got my new batch of "S" and "L" Rots on Friday, I've been feeding them the Rotifer Diet straight-up, no dilution in small dosages 3 times a day and my rots seem to be multiplying pretty good! I'm maintaining my Rot cultures at 1.019sg and 78deg F. I've also been putting 2 to 3 drops in my 1 liter larvae container (@ 1.0124sg and 78 deg F) and my Rots in there are thriving along with my one little "survivor"!

Is it me or is subman719 seem to be hijacking this thread. I had to go back just to make sure it was dazed's thread.

Freezing phytoplankton is a bad idea Barbara. The cells will rupture; listen to Gresham please.

I know what you mean ... Any thread that gets melev, GreshamH and rkelman to post comments has to be doing something right.

Freezing of most phytos is bad, accept, some like Nanno that have very strong cell walls it's fine to do. RD is mainly nanno so freezing is fine. Sticking it in freshwater is bad, bad for all marine phyto...most marine organisms in fact :(

I doubt Dazed has any issue with it :)

I dropped of some of the new rotifer feed to him (RotiGrow Nanno). Soon as he gets some time with it under his belt I hope he posts about it :)

He's got a tight set-up at his place. Nice and spacious :)

GreshamH, Will you be attending RAP this year ? If so, will you be bringing any of the new rotifer feed with you ?

"I know what you mean ... Any thread that gets melev, GreshamH and rkelman to post comments has to be doing something right."

I'm a post whore I'll post anywhere.. (obviously) Plus Dazed said there was beer.. There is beer right? No one ever posts in my thread. Dazed has everyone in here.

It's funny, I "remember" to clean the rot tanks all the time. It's just getting the time and energy to do it, that's the problem! LOL

As far as my wife goes, I'm still trying to convince her that I "need" a 300 gallon tank in the new house! You can just imagine how "that's" going! :hammer: :uzi: LOL I haven't even begun to tell her what I plan on having in the utility room! :)

Are you building the new house from scratch? If so offer her; her own area, you know like a walk in closet or a big island area in the kitchen, that way she get's something you get something, win win for everybody, lol.

I just pull the roti-diet out of the refrigerator; and dose it to the tanks; the dilution for me is what the ia is going into. Either a rotifer culture or a larvae tank.

I agree as well on the large bags of oto. i have enough c1 to last quite a while. lol.
