My chalice collection under new AI Sol's

Ok, where is my credit card! My tank is 90 gal 58l x 18w x 20h. Do you think that two sol's would work for me?Thanks

Nice corals dude......and yes, you have a addiction.....but a good one...keep up the good work.

Trying to. Thanks...

A lot of nice pieces indeed. Where's the FTS?

I'll try to take a few tonight and post them.

I kept scrolling and hoping there would be one too! Simply awesome! My favorites are the pastel chalice that looks like a War & Peace favia and the purple favia!

Thanks. Which chalice was it? I'm curious. I'll try to post some FTS pics tonight.

It may. In my case my tank has two braces on the top rim so I have 3 open areas. I've configured it with one sol per area. I'm currently using the standard optics but I'm planning on changing them to all 70 degree optics instead so I'll have a better spread.

Do you have a single brace or dual?

Here are a few shots. Took these a few minutes ago. I'm not the best photographer, sorry. :(

Dude! You have a serious problem. That is an awesome collection. And great pics as well. Great job!

Thanks bro. Trying to keep up with some of the guys here on RC. lol. I need to cut down though. Some of my colonies are getting pretty big so I'm running out of space. I may have to frag a few soon. :( lol

Very nice corals, congrats to you. I do have a question for you. I have two of the same lights and one more on the way for the new tank. I was thinking that when I mounted them, pretty much the same way you have mounted yours, That I would need a wood trim border (stained the same as the tank stand) around the fixture holding the lights so that I wouldn't have alot of light bleed out into the living room. What are your thoughts on this, wasting my time with the wood trim, needed or not?

Wow!!!! Ive been considering getting a chalice coral sometime down the line, I just started stocking my corals... and honestly, I was on the fence about it, but after this post, it will definitely be one of the corals in my tank!

Beautiful tank, hands down... I applaud you

Running out of room? Nah, you have your satellite tanks right here just 5 minutes away. LOL.

Cool, good to know bro. ;)

I have none. I am thinking of getting two Sol's with 70 deg optics.

I think 2 sol's for your tank would work. I'd recommend using the hanging kit to get better spread. I too ordered the 70 deg optics. I should have them this coming Tuesday.

Mine do bleed a little into my living room. Not a whole lot that it bothers in my opinion. I have mine 12" above the rim of the tank not the waterline. I think if you keep them between 8-12" from the rim the bleeding isn't so bad. If it's bothersome to you maybe a canopy would work best. Let me know what you decided on doing. Would be interesting to see how it turns out.

Your Chalices are cool but that Purple, White Rainbow Montie is sick!!

Thanks. That monti was a rare find. Picked it up at my local reef store. It was completely purple when they got it with light green polyps. Within a few weeks in my tank it colored up real nicely. I just upgraded my lights to the AI sol's but it looked just like it does in the pics under my previous T5's.

Some pretty cool ones here: http://aqualifeaquarium.com/chalice-frags

Pretty nice LFS. Didn't even know they had the 'yellow eye guy chalice' until I stumbled on their website, now I can't wait to get a frag. Florida's pretty far from California, though ;p

Never been to this site. I'll check it out see what they have. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you much. I've had this tank running for approximately 7 years now. It's been an amazing journey for sure. I really enjoy keeping chalices and I'm certain you will too if you give them a try. They have some of the most amazing colors, shapes and textures.

Beautiful tank!! Love the lps. What % of w/b/rb are you running?

Thank you much. I've been running mine pretty low to give the corals time to acclimate. I'm running an 8 hour cycle as follows.

W005 B012 R012 10min @1pm
W010 B020 R020 15min @1:45pm
W018 B030 R030 30min @3pm
W015 B027 R027 15min @6pm
W012 B025 R025 45min @7pm
W003 B010 R010 10min @9pm
W000 B007 R005 15min @9:15pm
W000 B004 R000 09min @9:30pm Lunar ON

Word of caution, you will most likely experience low alk with these lights if you have a heavily stocked system as I do due to the increase in coral growth. I've always kept my alk at 10-11dkh without a problem. In the first two weeks with these lights I saw an amazing amount of growth unlike anything I've ever seen before. I was so excited about the growth that I didn't stop and think what repercussions could come from it. I test my alk weekly and when I tested at the end of that first week my alk was down to 7dkh. I started seeing some corals showing small signs of bleaching. At first I thought the lights were bleaching my coral due to the light intensity and short time for acclimation. But after days of water testing and verifying all of my parameters and constantly checking my alk and seeing it continually drop to back down to 7dkh consistently after I adjusted it, I came to the conclusion that the increase in coral growth from the new lights was the culprit. The additional growth was using up more alk from the system. I ended up adjusting my alk dosage from 50ml per day to 64ml and this has corrected the problem. My alk is now between 10-11dkh consistently. In a system with light load this may not be as noticeable, but in a heavy system you will definitely notice. I recommend anyone who gets these lights to test your water parameters and adjust your dosing, ca reactors, etc accordingly to avoid bleaching. Hope this helps.

Here are my water parameters so you can see:

Cal 480ppm
Mag 1480ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 0-5ppm
Phosphate 0ppm
Ammonia 0ppm
Alk 11dkh
Temp 78F
Salinity 1.025

By the way, due to this incident I decided to invest in a Apex Aquacontroller. Best investment I've ever made. I have it monitoring my alk, automatically dosing at night and dosing as needed. Plus now I can monitor my parameters from my phone or pretty much anywhere. Great peace of mind for sure.

Thanks...
Rolando
