My clowns have spawned. Now What?

I have noticed my clowns doing this strange little dance lately. Now tonight it looks like there are eggs by my bta. I have looked through the breeding forum here and about the only info I gleaned was to buy a book. Anybody in the club ever tried to raise these? If not maybe somebody could point me to some info. If it is too much trouble they may end up as fish food but I am trying to weigh out the possibilities.

If you are not prepared right now with food and shelter for the fry they are fish food.

You need to have a tank ready for the fry and a source of food.

You will need a supply of rotifers for the first days, then move to newly hatched brine aound 8 days, then to flake after 10 or so days. Just to give you an idea.

Just out of curiosity, how do the fry end up in the other tank? I can't catch the biggest, slowest fish in my tank without a trap.

you need to place a rock by where the clowns regularly spawn in the hopes they use the rock, then transfer just before they hatch.

On this go round, watch and time the development to hatching.

then find out if they are frequent spawners.

thgen get all the equipment ready for a spawn and do the rock thing I mentioned.....then keep fingres crossed.

speaking of fish traps....took me 30s to get the big damsel from my 600g.

Thanks for dropping it back in.

I am still on the search for some info. I am sure I am not the only person that have had clowns spawn. But these are MINE! That makes me more interested.

Does the club have the book "Clownfishes" by Joyce D. Wilkerson? If so, check it out from the club.

Yes we do, I meant to add that in my list above.

If you want to borrow that book, please PM comas-library

That describes exactly I how I feel about my Bangaii's. Congradulations new daddy, even if you don't raise these eggs, you at least know that you have the opportunity in the future. keep us all up to date on any raising you decide to try.

FWIW, using my culture station i've been able to raise baby brine shrimp to full adult size, gut load, and feed to baby bangaii's. Culturing your own phyto will make it easier to raise rotifers (maybe not easier but cheaper anyways). if you need any help or advice please let me know. NewBeReef627 (i think that's the name) has been raising rotifers for her clown spawns so she could probably give you some good info on that as well.

Congrats on the clowns laying. What type are they? As for preparing for raising the larvae, start by reading the book mentioned in earlier replies. It will give you all the information you need. I can tell you from experience, there are no short cuts. Time the hatch and read the book. Then read the book again. Once you get prepared you will have a better chance of succeeding. Then continue on the steep learning curve. Don't get discouraged because more than likely you will do dumb things early. Once you succeed past meta, you are pretty much on your way. Good Luck if you decide to try. It's well worth the feeling of accomplishment when you are successful.

I'll try to get some pics of the 9month old percs I currently have. I need to test the new lenses I borrowed from Jason anyhow.

Percula . You talk about this steep learning curve? Sounds like the same curve that goes with a reef tank. I had no idea how much there was to learn when we decided to get a tank with some cool nemo and dorie fish. Oh yea and some of those squishy corals too. lol
I am going to watch and see how often they spawn. I am not ready for this bunch I have figured that much out. I am not sure if I want to do it. From what I have found the first 8-10 days and culturing the food would be a real pain.

rdonchann, you lucky dog i've been waiting for my clowns to spawn,i have checked out the clown fish book from comas library but since your clowns have already spawned i will loan the book to you if you notify the comas library that you now have it, and i can bring it to the next meeting,or if you need it sooner i live in edmond.

rdonchann. I've been thinking of what type of informative post I could type up here to lend you a hand and at least give you a hint of what you're in for. But I couldn't without spending a lot of time and typing a TON.

As it was suggested, your best bet is to read that book on Clownfish, enjoy that they are spawning, and pay close attention to how the clownfish behave. You'll eventually start to learn their "language".

Unfortunately, I think that the learning curve on raising marine fish is much sharper than that of setting up a tank. Be prepared to go a few months of just learning information. Then, be prepared for another couple months to get a good food culture going, and another month for a good successful transfer/capture.

Maybe we need a comas breeding list, a resource for members of those of us breeding marine fishies, in case anybody has questions like this they know who to ask. That and it would be cool to look through a list and see what our members are capable of. Complete with links as Travis has put above. (would save you time travis from having to look em up every time, lol) Just thinking out loud!
