My DIY Rock/Foam Reef

Hey Kannin,

Great build I must say. About how many caves and other potential "homes" would you say are in the structure? I love the open look, but it looks full at the same time. The only thing I would make sure of when I do this would be to have a fish list and possible territories mapped out. But it looks like there are quite a few...

There are 4 or 5 small caves and 4 bigger "mouse hole" type caves at the sand level that have small entrances but open up inside. I'm hoping to get lucky with gobie teams taking up residence in them. I want a pair of signal gobies and a shrimp/gobie team. Here is a picture of one of these caves. The entrance is on the left about 3 or 4 inches from the glass. There is also a "pass thru" type cave, just a little to the right in this pic. There are 3 of these at sand level and 6, up higher in the rock work.

There are 4 or 5 other tight spots in the rock work where a tang could feel safe at night or even a school of chromis or anthias. There are also 8 to 10 overhangs for shrimp and such and then there are probably 2 dozen holes and crevaces for reef dwellers like blennies, fridmanis and emerald crabs.

Here's a different angle of the first area which illustrates 2 clear territories. One in front of the structure and another behind it. I think there are at least 3 big territories and several smaller ones.

Thanks for the pics, looks great. I can't wait to see some livestock in this thing. When you were designing did you ever consider a CL system that was hidden in the rocks?

There is a closed loop hidden in the rocks. Well... sort of hidden. The drain is in the back center and the returns are in the lower corners. I am adding a third return at the front top with a wavy sea. You can see the drain 2 photos up and here is a pic of a return...

Oh I see now, very nice. This tank will be amazing, it has so much potential.

I dont think I read anything about the system behind the tank. Do you plan on using this thread for all updates or will you start a dedicated tank thread?

where did you get the nozzles for your returns? I have looked at the local hardware store but havent deen able to find them. Everybody looks at me like I am crazy when I ask them about it I guess because I dont know the real name for them.

Thanks this has been a great help by the way I was really amazed by the rock wall when I saw it. I had to read every post hoping at the end to see what it looks like finished. Hope to keep checking back for the final pics.

Thanks Again
Jeremy

Hello,

I am very excited about this concept. I have the light pannel, the zip ties, the rock, the drill, the bits, the epoxy, the crushed coral and the Great Stuff. The problem is, to make sure Great Stuff would really work and be "fish safe," I wrote to The Dow Chemical Company, gave them a link to this thread and asked what they thought of the idea. Here is their response:

Dear Ms. Kennedy,

Thank you for contacting the Dow Chemical Company.

Our regular GREAT STUFF(TM) products would not be recommended for this type of an application. They will absorb water over time and begin to break apart with constant exposure to water.

Our GREAT STUFF Pond and Stone product would be a better product for this application. This product is resistant to water and would not absorb water with constant exposure to it.

Pond & Stone is a polyurethane foam adhesive that can be used easily and cost-efficiently to enhance your yard. The product can be shaped and molded to create exquisite water features that help direct water flow over and around rocks in a waterfall, rather than under and in between. The black color allows it to blend among rocks and shadows. The product is fish safe and recognized by the International Professional Pond Contractors Association.

Additional applications include use in filling holes in living trees and securing cap stones in stone retaining walls. The black polyurethane foam is designed to bond to both porous and non-porous rocks and stones in a cost efficient manner.

A quicker and less expensive option than mortar, GREAT STUFF Pond & Stone Waterfall Foam Filler can also be used to set and secure the cap stones in a retaining wall. The black polyurethane foam is designed to bond to rocks and stones.

This product is carried by the distributors below:

So, I notice they do not say it's NOT fish safe. Mainly they are concerned about the integrity of the product over time. I will let my husband make the final decision (he's at work) whether to use pond foam or Great Stuff. I can hardly wait; this will be our best aquarium set-up ever!

But I've just got to say I love, love, love this whole idea!! All of the tanks on this thread are awesome! Keep up the great ideas everyone.

Great there is a home depot right across the street from me!
How long would you say it took too go from start(where you had all materials ready) to finished project!

It looks like the rockwork is one giant peace, which looks great but I'm wondering how you could get that into your tank? It looks like that would weight at least 200lbs!

I like your's... I think that when I saw it 3 to 4 months ago... that's about the time I decided to build an artificial reef.
