My DIY Rock/Foam Reef

Anyone know if Lowes sells the epoxy to coat the foam or an alternative that reef safe?

I have my PVC skeleton done with the rocks attached now all I have to do is the epoxy and sand part. I want to do it before this weekend so online ordering is out.

Ying / Yang. I eat Cheetos. I think you'll have better luck going to hobby stores. I got mine at a model train shop. Look for Finishing Resin. Make sure you post the picks.

Anyone try gel epoxy on small areas?

In my setup I don't have alot of visible foam so I am thinking that normal gel epoxy would work to adher the sand and crushed coral.

Thanks

If only I had the room for a workshop I'd love to give this a try!
I have a 65g diamond/corner tank that I have a cupple sketches of a rock backdroop I could do. I love that the possibilities are endless really. Also this is awsome you can hide a overflow box or any PVC that you wnat to stay hidden.

Keep up the great work and keep those pics comming!

Sorry to mini hijack this thread with another question.

Is the epoxy coat just to adher sand for a natural look or is it to seal the foam? I have very minimal foam visibility so I will either not coat it or use epoxy gel to adhere a bit of sand.

Thanks

I think both... I know you are trying to get it done this weekend but, if you can't find it at a model train store... buy it online from zap and I'm sure it could get to you by next weekend.

Once you spread the resin on the foam, how hard was it to get the sand and crushed coral to stick?

Easy... it was very sticky for 20 minutes or more. I brushed it on an area that was maybe around 5" x 5" and then used a spoon to sprinkle the sand on.

I really love the tank and have been tagging along watching here for a while...I currently have a 55 that I started in June but have a 135 that I might be buying off a buddy and instead of buying a ton of live rock again, I'll most likely use the 75 pounds I have in my tank and lots of this foam! Anyways, I just wanted to know where you got the rock that you attached the egg crate to? Thanks!

Pick out any good spots for your upcoming arrivals?

I have some ideas... but, I thought we should wait and see what you thought. My wife's sister wants to know if you're cute and single.

I got it from www.marcorocks.com but, I understand that he is having a few problems right now with his suppliers.

Thanks for the link, I'll be contacting them to see about getting a shipment....And, I'll have to post my results once I start to implement the project here in May/June...Thanks again and hope you keep posting this beautiful project!

just tuning in again... you fish look like their having fun with the environment and its looking great. Do you have significant open covered areas inside your rock work so that if the fish feel threatened they have enough places to hide. I have read that without such areas fish can become very stressed and without enough of them different types of fish may become aggressive towards one another. Just a thought, otherwise things look great.
