My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

Very nice nano. JEALOUS! i've started about a month ago. We'll see what happens. I hopes it's at least 1/4th as beautiful as yours someday.

I'm targeting color. I want amazing color. :)

Thanks for sharing. You are glorious!

I haven't checked on your tank in many months, and WOW, what progress! It's the best ever. I'm pretty much just a lurker here on RC.

Did you ever set your radion to natural mode?

I just got a Radion for my 3 month old RSM 130. I have it on full blast on natural mode for 12 hours/ day. No clouds or storms. 50% for the first week and 100% for the last two, no problems

Thanks!!! There have been some pretty big changes in the tank since adding the Radion, it's opened up all kinds of new doors. Yes, I used natural mode but didn't really like it, too green at sunrise/sunset. I posted some vids of it a while back comparing my custom profile to the Natural Mode. I'm currently at 70% for ~9-hrs (not including the lower intensity sunset/sunrise). My corals have definitely shown the effects of the last bump from 65 to 70%, I have a monti that's looking a little bleached and had some reduced PE and a little lightening of color from the rest of the SPS.

Very nice tank choice. Why the 70 gal cube and not the 93 gal. cube?

Marty

Not really sure on the final dimensions, but am leaning towards the smaller direction (maybe even 55g 30x24x18) because it takes up less room, only requires one additional Radion, and needs smaller waterchanges!!! :) I started as a nano guy, so thinking of doing 15g+ WC's is just really unattractive...

How soon into having your tank did you start dosing? I am just getting into sps corals and was looking into clams but i am weary of getting into them because i know nothing about dosing a tank properly.

There is one simple rule to dosing: test before you dose.

I probably started a couple months after the tank was started (when I added the clam), but the best way to determine if you need to be dosing and how much is to test your Alk/Ca/Mg at your weekly water changes. If you see a deficit in levels, then you need to start dosing. My target levels are 9, 450, and 1400 for Alk/Ca/Mg respectively.

When you first start dosing, daily or at minimum every other day testing is required to figure out how to adjust your dosing amounts. I've historically used Kent Tech-M products, but recently switched to BRS to use in conjunction with my dosing pump.

Wow, did not mean to open the can of worms on this one....Like the 55 dimensions there though.. Rimless maybe? I've been pricing Miracles 33x23x22 =72 gal can still go 2 Radions that way!!! Hear you on the WC's..

LOL, no worries, I had been thinking about it for a long time anyway. And yes, custom built starfire rimless. I've got some ideas for a stealth semi-external overflow that I think will look really cool if I can manufacture it. My latest thinking behind 30x24x18 is that EcoTech says the Radion is good for 24" coverage, so have a 30x30 tank may cause coverage issues in one direction.

I don't know if I really feel like leaving the Nano world though, I may just have to custom build an oversize stand and 34g starfire rimless tank!

Just a quick cell phone update from after today's WC. Will try to find the time to bust out the DSLR sometime this week.

The tank is looking a tad crowded, that's because I am trying to sell off a few things but haven't found a buyer yet (lobo, derasa, yellow lantana, and maybe a few others).

Looking good Ange, even more growth than the last shot...I would say your not near over crowded yet..plenty of room for the acros to branch out still. My suspicion is you must be eyeing something new..?

I think it looks good. Looks like its thriving. :)

Thanks token!

I love the way the Radion lights your tank. It scares me that I may need to buy one, too!

It's definitely a sweet light, overkill for this size tank but hey, if you are gunna play you may as well go all the way, right??? :) Get you one! I actually got mine locally here in Houston.

I just noticed... how is your glass so clean?! O.O
He religiously cleans it.

An algae pad, a Kent Pro Scraper, and diligence... :)

Thanks! No, I really just feel it's crowded and want to have room for what I already have to grow. The lobo has to go for sure, and the derasa is growing so quickly that it's running out of room. Plan to replace it with a small ultra green maxi which grows much slower. Not to mention I have to find a suitable location for that Bali Deepwater Acro that's up front left, should look sweet once it colors up!

Meant to ask how that flame hawk is doing? Any good pictures....

"Mo" is settled in well. Still a little shy besides at feeding time, but a great pop of color and personality in the tank. :)

I was trying to snag a good pic last night but no luck, once I get one I'll upload!

Got a shot of Mo:

And a green ric:

Honestly, I know the ric shot looks like some kind of fake abstract, I freaked when I looked at it straight out of the camera. But under the lighting that's exactly what it looked like in person at full 1:1 macro.
