My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

My favorite individual piece, a cali tort with exceptional color:

I think I might have a much smaller piece of the same kind of coral, thanks for the ID. I wasnt sure if it was indeed a tort or not, but it looks just like your cali tort. Awesome!
And Houston must have some sweet LFSs.

I think I am a bit spoiled by my trusty Houston LFS's!! Great selection of high end and healthy livestock (or cheap and healthy if you want to go that route), and I get nearly all of my dry goods locally for cheaper than internet pricing... :)

Well, since the murder of my damsel I've been torn on what type of fishy to add. I was going back and forth between an ORA striped blenny, flame hawkfish, and a mandarin. Non-reefers always LOVE the mandarin's but I've always considered them too much of a liability. After my last blenny experience, I was a little scared and thought the flame hawk would add a nice pop of color and be aggressive enough to fit in with the tank. So here he is in the breeder box to allow my feisty dottyback to get used to him:

They are great fish with lots of personality. Just watch the shrimp I had one that picked them off and then he jumped from the tank so watch that too...

Didnt know they were jumpers, then again I have heard of clowns and all kinda stuff jumping randomly. I knew about the shrimp, but mine are too big to be edible at this point. They definitely have personality!

Awesome tank.

Went back and read a few pages.

The cali tort is one of my favorites also.

Do you know par readings in your tank?

Thanks!! I've never taken PAR readings in the tank, though with the Radion currently at 65% intensity I would think they are rather high. :)

Yeah i had one too and he went carpet surfing! Not before he took out 2 peppermint shrimp and 3 chromis first though.

I noticed one day one of my chromis had a big wound on it and then dissipeared, then another, then i seen him one night attacking the last one.

He must of felt his job was done after that cause he jumped ship then.

I did love him though. Great little personality and they even swim like a bully!

The hawk has settled in nicely, though the coral beauty is going through another naughty streak. I caught him take a nip at my derasa again and he has been bullying the hawk a little.

Tandldel brought it to my attention that the "white acro" has colored up well. Its turned to a nice peach base with highlighter yellow tips and polyps. Also ID'd it as a Deepwater lokani.

Lastly, the turaki at bottom right is staring to turn blue again! I expect it to be sky blue in another month or so. And I also added a cool blue mille last week.

The lobo is on the side temporarily until I find a buyer. Quick cell shot:

Its been a few months since I have come on here and read your thread, and I must say your tank just keeps looking better and better! Love the flame hawkfish and the dottyback! The flame hawkfish has left your banded and cleaner alone? Also what do you have for cleanup crew?

Thanks for stopping back by! The hawk hasnt bothered my pep, CBS, or cleaner yet. CUC is about 5 turbos, 10 assorted size nassarius, 8 cerith, 4 astrea, 3 hermits, 1 emerald, 1 linckia star, and a hitchhiker fish eating mithrax crab that I can think of, plus the above mentioned shrimp.

Also, what setting do you have your mp10 at? I'm noticing the side my pump is on gets dead spots on the side by the rocks. Its bad ...I have hair algae growning on that side in the freaking sand! So annoying.

Ange, are you still running the two stock return pumps, or did you replace those with something else?

Stock returns, they are more then adequate turnover rate in the tank. The most important part is the flow in the actual display, which the MP10 is very capable of handling.

Reefcrest at 90%. I also switch to NTM every few nights to stir things up a bit. I have a dead spot in the back of the tank on the side of the MP10 also. I just make sure to clean it well with a turkey baster and when I siphon at water changes. I like the lower flow "dead spot" area to keep my crocea healthy and giving a rest zone for my inhabitants that don't like tons of flow (royal gramma, CBS, hawk, etc).

IME GHA problems aren't the result of low flow. The worst spot in my tank when I had an outbreak was at the opposite side of the MP10 where the rock gets the most flow of anywhere!! I think it was just because the MP10 would blow all of the food there and deposit it on the rocks on that side, which over time built up into phosphates leaching into the rock and GHA. Took a good bit of time to get rid of that whole mess. I never get GHA in my dead zone. I think the key is nutrient export (i.e. GFO or macro's) and being careful not to overfeed. More likely the former then the latter since I am quite a heavy feeder. :)
