My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

I have a quick question about your skimmer that I haven't seen answered. How often do you clean it? And when you clean it... how thoroughly do you clean it (by this, i mean, completely disassemble and clean each piece).

I've been dumping the skimmate every day and I've got a build up of brown gunk on the inside of the cone. This seems like it might actually help, so I'm not sure when I should attempt to really clean that out more than running hot water through it when I empty the cup.

Normally during my weekly water changes I:
1) Thoroughly clean the cup and lid (hot water and a brush, back to factory clean and clear)
2) Wipe down interior briefly with a paper towel while powered off (above water line)
3) Disassemble and rinse out salt from the silencer
4) Submerge the airline into the skimmer body while running for ~1min to flush salt creep

Every 2-3mo I completely disassemble and clean the entire thing.

I must say that this thread is an inspiration to my JBJ. Thanks for posting it and providing the work in progress. Def will be using your thread as ideas but none to copy tho lol

Thanks for the comments! And feel free to copy away, there is an old saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". :)

I've got the same skimmer (AquaMaxx HOB-I) and hand wash the collection cup once a week with warm water and toothbrush. I immediately see better collection results.

I disassemble the entire skimmer every 4-6 weeks and give it a rinse out and run the pump in a vinegar bath for about 30 minutes.

+1, hahahaha. Sorry slvr, had to do it... :) *inside joke*

I just heard that EcoTech released a new software update for the Radion, though I didn't get an email like on previous releases for some reason.

Plan to install this weekend when I am back in town and increase intensity to 75% (currently at 70%).

I hear natural mode is now less green at sunrise/sunset so I'll capture some new comparison videos to see if it looks closer to my custom profile... :) Should be interesting.

Love your tank! Your tank has really inspired me to strive for beauty in this hobby. Your corals look phenomenal.

Tank is looking great. Your tank is my ultimate goal.

Got a question... in another thread (not started by me) from back in October, I had asked a question about chillers. You replied that you found yours for $250... could you describe how you found such a great deal?

I'm sure it's in this thread, but what chiller did you get?

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the kind words!! Really appreciate it!

Thanks hextall!! I've got the JBJ Mini Arctica 1/15hp chiller digital version and a sweet network of awesome Houston LFS's!! It had been sitting at one of my LFS' for quite some time, and I talked the owner into $250 cash out the door... :) I guess I just got lucky. Looking back, probably one of the best purchases for overall tank health and safety.

Also been meaning to ask how the aggresivness of your neon dottyback is working out? I have two ocellaris clowns, a starry blenny, and a yasha goby. I really wanted to add the dottyback but thought it might fight with the blenny.

It's pretty aggressive, but no issues for me. It's mostly directed towards any new additions to the tank, so I have been using a breeder box for ~12+ hours to let the dottyback get "used to" looking at a new fish and that has been working well. Though, I haven't seen my pep in a while so it may have been eaten by the dottyback, hawkfish, or just died and got CUC'd. No problems with my two bigger shrimp (CBS + cleaner).

Just read this whole thing...love your tank, taking notes, thank you.

Thanks for the comment!! Feel free to drop by anytime with questions.

Only other update is that I got an ORA red planet today, hoping that it works out better then the last time I tried one!!

Nice video's. I do like the demo modes to review our settings. So are you staying put or switching to the natural mode. I'm staying with my settings. Also let's hope when they do introduce a lunar night mode we can import it into the artificial modes too. Good luck with the red planet. I've stayed away from the table acros due to room but this piece is really nice to see grow. Great color. Tank is long great.

Does your hawkfish mess with the shrimp?

I recent lost a orange spotted goby, six line, and clown all jumped out of my tank within 24 hour period. I'm looking for replacements now that I think I resolved my stray voltage issue. I really like the hawkfish, but LFS said they can eat shrimp...

I'm really hoping for a lunar mode also, I think that's the only thing lacking right now with the software. No plans to switch to natural mode at this time. I'm really hoping the RP colors up well under LED. And thanks for the compliment dood!

Thanks for the vids, and your tank looks great!

Anytime! Thanks!

My peppermint shrimp disappeared recently, though no clue whether it was eaten by the hawkfish, dottyback (also a shrimp eater), or just died and was consumed by the CUC. My large cleaner and CBS are fine so far.

By the way I just realized that I accidentally uploaded the same video to youtube twice!! Ooops! Corrections coming later.

OK, got it fixed up:

Ange I wanted to ask since you have had the 2lf 150's on the tank awhile if your still happy with the performance for both gfo/carbon. I'm thinking of adding them in and wanted your opinion. Saw early in the thread how happy you were with the gfo difference.

Thanks

Definitely worth every penny to run GFO from my experience. Nuisance algae? What's that?!? It totally knocked out my GHA. Plus I only clean the glass once a week. I use 1/3 of a cup and change once a month, so cost is negligible.

The carbon keeps the water crystal clear and quickly soaks up toxins from chemical warfare or deaths of certain animals (anemones, sea slugs, etc). Same dosing and change schedule as the GFO, and the media costs half as much.

=== One word of warning, be very careful when you start running this stuff!! ===

First off, make sure you rinse both media's very well before adding them to your tank. I typically add media to the reactor, fill with fresh RO/DI and let it sit for about 15min (it takes a while for the dry media's to soak up the water and stop floating). Then I run ~2.5gal of SW through each reactor independently using old water from a water change. I just set the reactor up in a sink so it spills directly down the drain.

Second, start with low dosage and work your way up to "target" levels. As with anything in reefing, slow is key. Ramping up too quickly can easily shock your tank and cause big problems and / or death of corals.

And lastly, the stock sponges in the TLF reactors are too coarse for some of the finer media's like BRS ROX0.8 carbon and even PhosBan IMO. I use bonded filter floss cut to shape, and this doesn't allow as many particles to get back into the tank. The bonus of this is that flow will eventually slow down as this floss gets clogged up and your pump will start making a buzzing noise, which is an automatic sign that your media is ready to change! (this always happens at the 3.5-4wk range for me)

Great info & Suggestions..One last question I have had differing listings of the canister diameters @ 3" and 4.5" could you let me know which it really is..hoping its 3"

Thanks again

Just measured, the PhosBan150 is 3" for sure, the larger diameter must be the PhosBan550.
