My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

I come back time and time again to admire your tank, and every time I can never get over/understand how flawlessly you mount the SPS in your tank. No glue or epoxy in sight, please write a textbook on the subject LOL!

I thought you might be interested in this as well if you haven't already seen it.

I stopped using epoxy a LONG time ago, too unsightly and I hated how long it took to cure and that it made the skimmer madly overflow for an hour or so after use.

My trick? I always either cut the plugs or break frags off of the plugs before I mount them. Then I use some cheap $5 BSI Ethyl CA gel from my local hobby shop (better then and way cheaper then "coral glue" in my book). They don't look perfect at first, but mounting like this really minimizes the time it takes for them to encrust onto rocks then it looks seamless.

Simple as that!! :)

just read through every thing. and now i have to adjust my want list. i also have the jbj nano-cube 28 quad cf. i have only been up and running for 3 months now and just a few frags for now. Thank you for all the detailed information. i spent a lot of time in books and all over the net trying to find all the information you have right here. so glade that i found this thread.

nice tank, i just got mine up and running. i actually took the top off of the stand and put it on my nightstand. these little nano tanks are the easiest to run imo.
out of all the tanks i've owned i've had better luck with the biocubes, nano-cubes, and aquapods than any big tank with a sump.

Glad I could help, that was my "hope" when I got started, that I may help someone out somewhere along my journey :)

Thanks!! Agree, it's a pretty neat little setup. I've been tooling with the idea of setting up a sweet custom build for months, but just can't pull myself away from this little guy!

Do you use phytoplankton for your corals and clams. if so, how much how often.

I feed tons of stuff for corals, phytoplankton, zooplankton, amino acids, oyster eggs, cyclopeeze, and most will even eat New Life Spectrum Thera+A 0.5mm pellets. Not to mention tons of fish poop! I normally feed corals 1-2 times a day + fish 1-2 times a day on the biggest variety of stuff I can. For fish I mix up frozen squid, cyclopeeze (that's a feed all), frozen mysis, New Life Spectrum Thera+A 1mm pellets, H20 Life's formula 1&2 frozen, plus an occasionally variety of fresh good from the grocery store like mussels, clams, shrimp, oyster, etc.

Photo update anyone???

Yoshi is finally being sociable enough to capture. Eats Newlife Spectrum Thera+A 0.5mm pellets just like ORA says they will. I see him also munch on pods all day long, and even hits on the cyclopeeze I feed fairly often. I think I actually even saw him eat a mysis today. My point? Dood eats and is getting fat :)

Mo would like to make an official appearance as well:

Even Javier, my most elusive fish to capture, came out for a decent shot, though he seems to have bumped his head on something recently:

That guy is awesome. I want one so bad but I'm just not confident in being able to keep him healthy. One of my LFS has one but I'm sketchy about it. It looks thin too. The owner of another LFS has 2 of the other popular types and he even said that unless you're constantly restocking copepods they'll just fade and die.

I don't know, once my tank is better established I might have to have yet another LFS order me an ORA one and ask if they can quarantine it and show me that it's eating prepared foods. Yup...I think I'm going to have to try that. They're just too cool.

wow i thought i fed a lot. i have eight different foods at this time but looks like i will be making a trip the LFS. Would you pleas make a video of you feeding. I am always afraid that i feed to much and i am getting some unwanted growth (algae). I went from feeding two times a day to every other day but it does not look as though my tank is as happy when i dint feed as much. I feed more food then can be eaten in 2-3 min and most things i read says thats to much. Plus what ever is blown in to the rocks. I feel a video would help me see how to adjust for my feedings, as to how much to feed at one time. thanks so much, and thanks for such a quick reply to my other question.

What is Mo? How many fish do you have? I was told the same about Angels do you have any trouble with eating corals or aggression? I wanted to get a flame or bicolor angel.

Thanks man! I figure that my tank is well established enough to have a large copepod population, plus my little guy is eating pellets and frozen so you really can't go wrong in that case. I still may add live pods every couple of months to keep the population bolstered, haven't decided yet. I've only had the mandarin a month now (long term success is 6+ mo IMO), and he is getting fatter so I guess the current system is working well.

Algae is normal without nutrient control like skimmer and GFO. Although I feed often and a variety, I typically only feed what can be consumed in about 1-2min. So small and often is key. I'll try to snag a vid, but don't know that you will learn much from it.

Doesn't your flame angel eat your corals? I'd love to get one, but everything I read says don't do ti.

It's a coral beauty, and honestly the only coral I ever saw it nip at was a leather tree coral. Tons of SPS in my tank and no issues. Clams? Oh yeah, that little bugger goes through fits where he will nip at clam mantles, but they normally are only short stints (<1-wk) and months between them so no real harm comes of it. He is also very aggressive towards other fish. But, even though it's a gamble and he causes trouble on occasion, I love angels (the way they look, color, behavior, activity, etc) and would never have a tank without one.

Yoshi looks AWESOME! Man, his color really pops!

Thanks bro, agree he is a cool little cat! Definitely better now that he is out in the open all the time. And it's weird (but good), for a peaceful fish none of my more aggressives ever mess with him.

Mo is a flame hawk. I had 7 until a couple days ago when my royal gramma decided to try carpet surfing.. :( Still considering what other fish to add, I think I will probably end up with 7-8 in the tank.

As I said above, I say go for the angel. If you get a nasty one you can always catch it and swap, but it's a great addition to any tank IMO.

Awesome pics of Yoshi.

I wasn't able to keep mine. After 2 months, stopped eating as much and hiding. I will track your progress and consider one again down the road.

Yup, it's only been a month but hopefully it works out. I'm really thinking about buying some live pods tomorrow while I restock on live phyto, oyster eggs, and frozen cyclopeeze. I figure it's better to be safe then sorry.

ange062: I am dialing in my automatic dosing scheme at the moment. Howe much do you dose of Alk., Ca and Mg on a daily basis and when do you dose?

Right now I am doing 3 doses each for Alk. and Ca each night starting at midnight with the last dose ending just after 5am.

I use BRS supplements, each brand has at least a slightly different concentration so it's something to keep in mind. My demands are also very high, as you might expect which a bunch of large SPS and 4 clams.

I currently dose 32mL of Ca/Alk per day, distributed over 8 evenly spaced doses (i.e. 4mL every 3-hrs). I also dose 12mL of Mg 6 times a day (2mL every 4-hrs).

My best advice for you is to start with "recommended" dosage per the instructions of whatever supplement you are using. Test every day for about 10-days and make small adjustments until you get close. Then test every other day for about a week, again making small adjustments as needed. Then you can reduce to once a week. It took me a month to get completely dialed in, now I only test 1 or 2 times per month.

Thanks! I use the BRS supplements as well so our concentrations should be very similar. Any specific reasoning that you dose over the whole 24h of a day instead of just during the lights out time. I have seen a lot of arguments for doing in when lights out (for Alk) in order to reduce the PH drop that happens each night. On the other hand I can see the advantage of dosing throughout the whole 24h in order to minimize the swing in parameters.
