My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

Divers Den has some of the cleanest livestock available in the hobby. I've had nothing but perfect experiences with them. LA, not so much. I'm considering not even quarantining fish I buy from DD anymore, based on my experiences with them and on their description about how they quarantine and prophylactically treat their specimens.

Yeah, I'm kicking myself for starting CP treatment now. Live and learn...

FWIW, I just put wrasses into observation + prazi. No copper unless symptoms present. They just seem to react badly to CP.

My wrasse didn't take well to it either but, he pulled through. Had a pinched stomach towards the end of treatment.

In my opinion, anything that can absorb a treatment and change its concentration can affect it effectiveness. Since there is no test for concentration with CP, I personally am reluctant to go in that direction. I am not advocating NOT to use this or any other treatment protocol, simply providing a view point.

There is a test for concentration of CP and live rock does NOT lower its concentration.

I'm assuming you mean using a spectrophotometer to measure CP concentration. Have you done testing using one in systems with live rock? If this has proven to be the case, that's good news for me.

My two tangs made it through a 3.5 week treatment of CP at 40-50mg/g. They are now in the DT but its only been a couple days.

Some long QT times here.

Let's say you have a 20 gal QT. Mix 100 gal water with CP. Use the transfer method to erradicate ich.

Would two weeks be long enough for CP to erradicate brook and uronema and maybe other bad things?

It seems like immedaitly following that with Prazi would be good because any invert not killed by CP would likely be in a weakened state.

Anyone know approx. rate of decay of CP? I just dosed 50mg/g 24hrs ago but want to raise it to 80mg/g. Will 30mg/g extra added be ok?

I would only dose 10mg/gal, and then wait a day or so to make sure your fish are still eating. If all is well, dose another 10mg/gal. Rinse & repeat until you hit your 80mg/gal target.

Not personally, but other people at public aquariums have using a UV spec. I wish I could link you to papers or articles but unfortunately it is all word of mouth at this point. The gist of it is that UV light, ozone, and GAC lower its concentration, live rock and skimming do not.

Been a couple days now with the two new introductions. Still no sign of Ich in tank. This was after a 4 week treatment in DT, followed by a separate 3 week treatment in QT with two tangs.

So my hippo passed yesterday in the DT. Not 100% sure what happened. I transferred to my DT and it was hiding for a couple of days. The last few days I saw it lodged in a rock. I didn't think anything of it until I found it in the same exact place the next day. It took me another half day to realize it was dead. The sailfin that I qted along with it is doing just fine. It was difficult to diagnose what happened because the hippo was lodged in the rock pretty well and I had difficulty extracting it. It was almost like it literally got stuck and couldn't get out. I doubt this is what happened. The hippo did have ich much worse as evidenced by the large amount of spots on its body in comparison to the sailfin. Perhaps it was acclimation shock? When I transferred the two tangs over, I did the transfer somewhat quick as my qt and dt were within 1 degree of each other temperature wise. I did a fast drip to eliminate as much as the qt water as possible and then dropped them in.

OK, thank you. I guess we'll just have to rely on word of mouth until someone is able to do more scientific testing on it. If I had access to the right equipment, I'd do it myself.

Hi folks,

I went through all 35 pages. great thread and definitely taught me a lot about CP.

Anyway, I want to let everyone know that on the 29th I place my order with Alfa Aesar and i received it today (I live in Canada - Fedex initially attempted on the 31st). If anyone else from Canada wants to order, i suggest you take the 50G bottle because shipping is a killer (45$ US to ship). I wish i'd known.

I know a lot of you had problems getting it from them, The only thing different that I did was put a company name in instead of my name.

Good luck

Here's another update,

On the 29th I also emailed Louis at aquainfo33@aol.com from another post I saw on this thread.

They got back to me this morning and after some back and forth they agreed to ship me a bottle (I explained that my fish died of ich and this is not to treat existing fish but rather new ones moving forward). They are cheaper then Alfa Aesar and offer more reasonable shipping rates (there might be some additional custom fees). They also provide a COA (Certificate of Analysis) to showcase the purity of the product.
