My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

Has anyone experienced an increased incidence of bacterial infections while treating with CP in a QT/HT? The last two fish I ran through separate quarantines developed eye infections while under CP each time. The first was a Royal Gramma, and the second was a Blue Reef Chromis. I was able to treat each one with kanamycin successfully, but am curious if others have observed this as well. Further anecdotal observation - the Royal Gramma developed another eye infection and a bit of fin rot when I treated my DT last month. Both subsided on their own, likely because they developed toward the end of the treatment period.

Does CP have an immunosuppressive effect?

Yes, trigger had white patches indicative of bacterial infection, wrasse developed white spot on eye(went away), rabbitfish had terrible eye infection in both (hasn't cleared). It would seem to me, once the parasite is eliminated, the open wounds get infected. Of course I have no evidence.

Wow, never made the correlation! Indeed I've been having issues with various bacterial infections recently (never an issue in the past). Definitely started around the time I started using CP.

I've started using both metro and kanamycin in the QT process (usually added in food)

Going to review how I QT and in what order. I'm thinking of switching from prazi first to CP first since several cases of velvet (all from same LFS). I'd boycott them, but they often get livestock in I can't get anywhere else.

Thanks for opening my eyes to an issue I did not put together in my mind.

Deff velvet season I've been trying to start cp after first initial eating. Can't waist time with velvet lurking

Definitely my thoughts as well. Sadly I missed the first signs on a couple of fish and lost them. Seems to occur about a week into QT, probably around the time the LFS's low level copper wears off.

Day 3: Pogo is dead :( thanks to everyone who attempted to help me this morning.

Although it's unknown what killed him, I fast tracked CP treatment for Bobo.

I did a 40% water change
added 40 mg/g of CP.

So far I have this to say about measuring the dose: Get a proper scale and a weight to calibrate it. It's such a small amount, it's very easy to make a mistake.

At first, I was going to measure 1 gram with my kitchen scale and mix it with 100ml of water. Then, by that science, 28 ml would be the equivalent to 280 mg. Well, a kitchen scale is grossly inaccurate, and since it measure at 1 gram at a time, who's to say you don't have 1.9 grams?

I am still waiting for my MG scale to come in, but luckily my wife works at a manufacturing plant and they have these types of scales available. I was surprised to see what her measurement of 1 gram was vs. my kitchen scale... I would have killed the fish for sure!

Well about 5 days after treating the male Blackfoot clown passed :( only thing that stood out was he got super pale.. Female seems fine. Although she is twice his size..

That is an interesting question. So far, I have run 8 fish through CP:

Desjardini - went through fine, no problems
Flasher Wrasse - died, not sure why, but timing with CP suspicious
Four Pyramid Butterflyfish - no problems
Naso Tang - no problems, so far (2 weeks in)
Achilles Tang - pretty significant eye infections that I thought might be flukes, but I think now bacterial. Treating with NGP. Not gone so far though.

Thanks! It may affect different species differently. As I've mentioned before, I've had catastrophic results with flasher wrasses and will no longer treat them with CP. The other fish I've treated with CP so far include:

Ocellaris Clownfish pair - no problems
Red Firefish - no problems
One-spot Foxface - no problems
Tailspot Blenny - no problems, although some appetite suppression was noted

Quick update on my DT post-CP treatment: over the past couple of days, I've started to see small clumps of hair algae forming, so I'm pretty confident that most (if not all) of the CP has been removed. So far, I haven't seen any measurable PO4, so perhaps I've dodged that bullet. We'll see how things progress over the coming weeks. If anything, my foxface and blenny will continue to be well-fed. :)

Interestingly enough, the clump of chaetomorpha in my sump survived the treatment intact and is starting to grow again. This despite zero light for 4 weeks in addition to the CP treatment. I had quite a bit of halimeda in my sump (not on purpose - hitchhiker on LR) as well, and it was completely wiped out by the CP treatment.

I'll likely stop UV this weekend, and keep carbon and GFO going. Will probably keep changing out the Poly-Filter strip weekly for a couple more weeks as well. At this point, I don't see any reason not to reintroduce my inverts once their quarantine has completed in mid-March.

Day 8 (Day 5 of CP treatment): Everything still looks good. Ocellaris still has an apettite, the water is becoming a little cloudy but all levels look good.

Question, how do you avoid water changes for the full 30 days of CP treatment?
The rate at which my nitrates are going up, I'm assuming i'll be able to go 20, maybe 25 days before nitrates hit a dangerous level.

I do water changes during CP treatment...just replace the appropriate amount of CP in the new water. Be sure to add it to the new water before you put it in the tank so the concentration never drops in the tank.

Nitrates are not much of a concern for fish; only coral/inverts.

I forget; are you treating with CP in your DT or a QT?

For those that are mixing CP with prazi, can you share what mg/g your CP is?

Will CP alone be able to treat internal / external flukes & worms?

Is it ok to feed Dr.G's medicated food during CP QT process?

I've dosed Prazi with CP at both 40mg/gal and 60mg/gal. Saw some appetite suppression with one of my fish at the higher dosage, but it returned after a few days.

Can't comment on Dr. G's medicated food.

Thanks Chris -

Will CP eradicate ich at 40mg/g? I noticed lethargy / death for sensitive species such as wrasses & anthias at 60mg/g + prazi.
